    The uranium "gun-barrel" bomb and the plutonium "implosion" bomb used on Japan combined did not come close to the death toll of the single fire-bomb attack on Tokyo. It is impossible to say exactly how many people died because of the radiation, because being exposed to a certain level of RADs only increases your risk of getting cancer, those marginally far away recieving only a small dose of radiation. Radiation is everywhere, that is how we calculated the age of the Earth. Humans do not have the power to destroy the Earth. To say otherwise is to over estimate the importance that humanity has played in Earth's history. Chernobyl has been deserted, and what is considered to be nuclear waste land is now inhabited and flourishing with wildlife. Bombs are scary, but I do believe in peace through superior firepower, since there seem to be others on this planet that only want to inflict chaos. To those who have said F*@k the US.. You are complete idiots. The United States does not conduct atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons, and neither does Russia... But those are the only two countries that have signed and agreed not to. France, Britain, India, Pakistan, Isreal, and others are all capable. Fission and fusion are both powerful tools, but should be used wisely.

      Fire bombing using conventional weapons in Germany and Japan during WW2 was far more wicked than the nukes thrown in at the end of the war. What's so bad about speaking German? It's extremism and misguided idealism that cause us harm and this can come from any culture. Right now it's seems centered in Israel and the USA.

      Not a response to evil, were these horrible things, but a way to expediate the end of the war without costing more American lives, and Japanese lives by invading Japan itself. That would've been atrocious. It's estimated approximately 10 MILLION Japanese would've died, and at least a million Americans as they invaded the isles. I agree...kind of...not really, but please get your facts straight. I'd forgive you if this was a current events discussion, but this is something with agreed upon FACTS that don't change.

      The reason we invented these bombs is so that we would never have to use them. Nagasaki and Hiroshima suffered the consquences of this horrific power. Since then, no one else has been bombed. Just look at how tiny the HUGE battleships in the ocean looked compared to the enormous burst cloud. They made these very large ships look like tiny toys. And the nuclear bombs we have NOW are even MORE powerful than what you saw in this these old films. The power is truly devastating. Nuclear bombs helped the US avoid an all out war with the Soviet Union for 45 years. Everyone knew what we happen if either one launched one against the other...it would be mutually assured destruction and annihilation. No one was that stupid. Because of this, millions and millions of lives were saved because of the nuclear bomb.

      A few things to remember:

      A lot of the same research that went into building these truly horrific devices also brings us nuclear energy, medicine and the like. Without the same research that created nuclear bombs, nuclear medicine that saves lives from cancer may not have come about.

      Nuclear energy is safely used in ships and even on land installations providing some countries (France) with a majority of their power at a lower environmental cost than traditional fossil fuels.

      Also, as some of the other posters here have noted, not all of these blasts are the work of the USA. In fact the UK, France, USSR (now Russia), China, Pakistan, India and a few others have detonated their own nuclear weapons. The "Czar" bomb of the USSR was the largest nuclear weapon detonated in the atmosphere and estimated at 57 Megatons. Its original design was to be around 100 megatons but was scaled down to minimize fallout. The current largest weapon in US arsenal is the B83 of variable yield, up to 1.2 megatons. Wikipedia states that in comparison the Oklahoma City bombing, using a truck-based fertilizer bomb, was a mere 0.002 *kilotons*.

      Finally, consider all the explosions in this video have occured and very few people feel any lasting effects from these blasts.
