being captured was the ultimate loss of honor, it was not because he feared what the americans would do to him

    • Cultures are diverse

      One's fun is another's hell.

      About wars:
Wars will be wars. The one who carries a bigger stick tends to be the 'peace' keeper, I'll give you that. 'We' ended the war isn't the whole story either. But that's history now. We can all but learn from it.

Do you not know anything about history? If captured he would have been sent to a POW camp! Not like quantanimo etc

    • POW for japanese.

POW camps were totally lopsided for the germans as opposed to the japanese. Germans often lived a very comfortable stay during the war getting fed better meals then our own prisoners were getting.... On the other hand, japanese POWS wernt treated as well... Just look at what we did with Japanese AMERICANS.

I do not like what the japanese did to other country's during WW2 (Grandpa fought the Japanese in Nanking before it was overrun.). But I do respect that era of japanese soldiers, they lived and died with honor.

  • It is an honourable Japanese tradition

to take ones own life. He would be mocked by his fellow countrymen when he returns from being a P.O.W after the war. This is why he killed himself. Shame

  • fog of war

Things that are done during wars are always open to debate, collateral damage, the acceptance of it and the amount of innocents that are deemed acceptable to facilitate an objective.
Now if you saw bin laden enter a building i assume you would be up for a reward if you passed on that info to the relevant authorities and the building was taken out, regardless of casualties.
Likewise if you yourself torched that building even if it was full of children (conscience aside) would you be rewarded.
Could you drive someone down and claim it was your belief that that person was bin laden, even if it turns out to be some old grand dad, are you being patriotic?
    You tell me.

ON ONE HAND JAPAN WAS AN AGGRESSOR COUNTRY AT THAT TIME. THEY INVADED EAST ASIA. THEY WERE ALLY OF NAZI GERMANY.
ON OTHER HAND, U.S.GOVERNMENT IN ORDER TO END THE WAR COULD BOMB BIG MILITARY OBJECT OF JAPAN INSTEAD OF CIVILIAN CITY.
IN CONCLUSION I WOULD SAY THAT BOTH SIDES HAS ITS OWN TRUTHS AND LIES. SO IN FUTURE, WE HAVE TO PREVENT SUCH SITUATIONS

  • well...

If the US did have an invasion, their targets would not be Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the two cities were literally "testing sites" for "the bomb" because the US wanted to test the bomb's effect on heavily populated areas and the US did not want to waste soldiers in an invasion. However, the aftermaths of the bomb were not really accounted for since this was the earliest experimentations on nuclear weapons and the areas in which the bombs exploded caused the ground to not be able to have any vegation due to raditation for several years.

BTW I totally agree with avgjoe, people need to distinguish between "government" and "country"

Yes true the aftermaths of those nuclear attacks on Japan were severe and that information regarding the aftermaths could easily be found... I never said anything about lack of evidence of the harmful effects of atomic weapons... I SAID At the time. There was little to no knowledge on radioactivity and genetic mutations due to such phenomena.. THEREFORE IT WAS NOT ACCOUNTED FOR. PLEASE LEARN TO READ.
P.S. There is a huge difference between "accounted for" and "accounts on", please learn to read before commenting.

    • Just another thought

The people make up the country, the people ELECT the government to speak for the people of the country therefore ........... in a way, the people are the government in a round about way. Also, know matter what the government elected by the people doe's, half the people won't like it and if they go the other way, the other half won't like it so they know they can't please everyone so they please themself's until their term is up or they get kicked out of office. Remember, its our government, by the people, for the people, of the people. At least that's what they say. Just something to think about.

    • thanks mazda

thanks mazda for getting it. the united states did in fact invade japan, iwo jima and okinawa. we conquered iwo jima. thats why we were able to run successful bombing campaigns in the first place. in fact, i would also say that we killed an estimated 120,000 people with tokyo fire bomb runs just before the hiroshima bomb. the decision was made not to bomb tokyo, however probably any city in japan could have fell.

    • Bull!!

They started it we finished it period!!!!! Why don't you people who are so quick to put us down ever talk about the atrocity's committed by Japan and Germany that killed a million time's more people than the bomb's dropped on Japan. Why..... because its easyer to spread bullshit than to tell the truth and the truth is harder for you to except because you are so damn jealous of us. You probably don't have the ball's to admit that if if was not for the USA you would all be speaking German and have a swastika tattooed on your ass. You were not there and you don't know what the people went through to fight a suicidal Japanese army. You have no clue and you don't have the right to judge.

    • here you go

hitler was no less than the most evil individual who ever lived. the only thing i regret about hitler is that he was too much of a pussy to face defeat like his cronnies at the nuremberg trial. the crimes against humanity that the japanese are responsible for probably made them deserve the bomb. joeyboy before you put words in my mouth, just because i said they deserve the bomb doesnt mean i think they should have got the bomb. i have the balls (id still have the balls if i didnt) to admin if it werent for alot of nations we would all be under nazi rule, im not stupid enough to think they would force everyone to learn german, because its too costly and there wouldnt really serve a purpose for having slaves learn your language. if not for the french we would still be under british rule, dont forget to thank those funny cigarette smoking, beret wearing individuals. i have no problem judging those other evil people who have committed what i see as immoral acts of bloodthirst. id hate to be either of the sides on judgement day. its wrong no matter who does it.

  • Dropping the bomb

Dropping the atomic bomb not only saved hundreds of thousands of lives of US marines who would have had to invade the island of japan but also saved teh lives of hundreds of thousands more japanese soldiers who would have died in the fight for their mainland. There were many casualties lost but you have to compaire the oppurtunity cost, 200,000 casualties from the atomic bombs dropped without loss of american life in a fight we didnt start, or 500,000 american troops killed by suicidal extremist japanese warriors inflicting high casualties on themselves and america. They made the right decision. I had a friend named Katsua who was a foreign exchange student and I talked to him about it, he spoke little english and I asked him what the japanese thought about the war, and all he said was "We think it as, my bad, our fault, we sorry"

    • one thing

the difference in the dropping of the bombs was that it was on civilians. a soldiers job is to fight and in doing so he/she knows that they might have to pay the ultimate price. pearl harbor was a military base. hiroshima and nagasaki were towns full of civilians.

By avgjoe 1138605858 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • The difference is

Every MAN, WOMEN,AND CHILD would have been ordered to fight to the death. Some of you people really need to learn about the Japanese culture of that time before you make a comment about something you know nothing about. It was all about honor and loosing face which was all important. You did not disgrace yourself or your family and most important of all the emperor by surrendering. Had we invaded and not dropped the bomb the blood bath whould have been beyond discription

By canman 1138689907 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • sigh..

deja vu...Why do people think that if we invaded instead of dropped "the bomb" that there would be no innocent lives lost. Dont you think that if we invaded Japan that there'd still be a great deal of collateral damage? I mean look at todays war with guided weaponry in populated areas...people still die. Now imagine that with unguided weapons in extremely dense areas like tokyo.

By Dirk77 1138639530 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • its not right no matter how you spin it

collateral damage by definition is the unintentional harm to people or places. i emphasize "unintentional". with that being said, i would disagree with your comment. all the death caused by those bombs was intentional. they knew there would be great civilian casaulties. the problem is your idea of what collateral damage is. you think its anytime a civilian is killed. its not collateral damage when your target is almost 95% civilian (thats taken from just about all my research on this subject, which is quite extensive). im not someone who thinks war is always a bad thing. sometimes war is needed, but at least have the courage to fight the soldiers and not the women and children. if you decide its better to fight the women and children at least have the courage to let them defend themselves. im a proud American. i will support my country, but not a government that does that. before you debate that, review what "collateral damage" is and also learn to distinguish "government" and "country".

    • blah blah blah

Yea right, You were not even born yet and you don't have any idea what your talking about. If you were on the Island's fighting them you would understand why. But since you were not and have no clue of what was, your comment is lame.Had you been there and seen what the Japanese did to WOMEN AND CHILDREN by the thousands all over Asia and the South Pacific you would have a whole different outlook but its easyer to just run down you own country. You have no idea of what you speak. From someone who was there.

By canman 1138688880 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • bleh bleh bleh

i never said i was there, i realize i wasnt even born yet. in fact, in order for me to have fought in that war id have to be at least 79 years old (congrats to you for making it that far in life and thanks for your service in that war). you also cannot distinguish "country" from "government". i never ran down my country, i ran down my government. i have this way of explaining the difference to kids, ill try this with you. everyone in our nation is part of our country, not everyone in our nation is part of our government. to address the part about not knowing what something is like because someone wasnt there is asinine. there are accounts of what took place in almost every battle in any library in the country (notice how i didnt say government, there is a difference). if you justify killing japanese women and children by what they did to japanese women and children, you are no better than those you seek to destroy. you speak as if you were president trumann giving the go ahead to drop the bomb. for that i call you a coward (i still appreciate your service to our country and our government, even though i dont support the latter).

By avgjoe 1138726928 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • As I said

You know not what you speak. And to call me a coward for being in favor of the bomb prove's you still don't know. I fought on Iwo Jima and Okinawa and to think you could know what it was like by going to the library is really asinine. There is no book you could read that could make you understand the horror of that war. You can read it but you can't feel it smell it or taste it. The book is just word's not the real war. EVERY person in Japan would have been ordered to fight to the death. The blood bath would have been unspeakable if we would have had to launch an attack on mainland Japan. I fought for your right to have your own opinion and speak it, therefore, i respect your opinion, disagree, but respect it and would fight again for you to keep that right and I don't mean to offend you. Just someone who was there and saw first hand. Just ask any vet that was there.

By canman 1138749774 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • O RLY?

you fought because you got paid to fight. you did not have my opinion in mind when you went there. there was never any thought of japan invading our country. my civil liberty was never in danger, you were not protecting my right to have an opinion. in fact even without civil liberty i can have an opinion, i can also speak it. if youre going to use that 'fight for your rights' cliche, use it right. say 'i fought for your right not to be persecuted by a government for <insert choice of civil libert here>'. i just find it very difficult to believe im debating with a 79+ year old man. what division were you in?
