From Xbox to box office--Ubisoft Entertainment has opened a new studio to adapt popular video game franchises into movies and television series.

This isn’t Ubisoft’s first run-in with the entertainment business. In 2010, Disney adapted the company’s “Prince of Persia: Sands of Time” into an over $300 million-grossing film starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

But Gamespot reports, Ubisoft’s CEO implied the move to the big screen is more strategic than desired by the company. He’s quoted as saying...

“We will start making movies not because we want to, but because this is what we have to do … If we don’t, we will not be able to take advantage of the next generation.”

Ubisoft owns big name franchises such as Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell -- but some gamers aren’t looking forward to another film adaptation of a beloved video game. One commenter on IGN says...

“This is most likely going to end up as a fail. Games should stay games and movies should stay movies.”

But a writer for FirstShowing.net has a little more faith, saying, Ubisoft has proven itself in the gaming industry -- why not with movies?

“[Ubisoft’s] library contains fantastic award-winning series … Honestly, I could see pretty much any one of those be turned into a movie, let's just hope Ubisoft knows how to put together a great Hollywood movie... without Hollywood. It would be all for nothing if their movies turned out worse, but I'm sure they have a plan.”

And a writer for The Daily Page agrees and says, there’s plenty of room for improvement in the video-game-to-movie business.

“The height of of the genre, if you can believe it, might be Milla Jovovich's zombie-blasting Resident Evil adaptations, and that's not saying much... Ubi's production team has already shown us they know how to tell stories and create believable characters, both on the small screen and the big.”

The new studio will be called Ubisoft Motion Pictures and will be based out of Paris, France.
