What you are doing is finding the iron nails that are nailed in the wooden wall studs -- which of course gives you the location of the studs. Usually, you would want to nail *into* the wooden studs if you are hanging anything substantial, not avoid it like you point out in the video. But since what you are hanging is very light (the clock), it would not matter.
