  • Not only he DID survive...

    ...but he managed that terrible situation so damn well that now here in Italy he's almost an idol! He lost both his legs, and not only he still drives (and WINS!!!!) a BMW in the European Championship (I think)... But he also brought the torch for the Torino 2006 olimpic games some days ago! Can you imagine that? For that reason, and the hope he gave to all the people who suffered similar injuries in their life, I think he's one of the most loved athletes in our country.

  • Courage!

    He somehow survived this crash, which upon impact sheered off both of his legs. I've seen a photo from the moment of impact and it's not a pretty site, as you can see parts of his legs among the debris. As others have commented, he still races and indeed wins on occasions. Inspirational!

    It was a CART race held at Lausitz, Germany in 2001, the guy that hit him was Tagliani. The guy races now for BMW at the WTCC-ETCC and have won races, and I have read somewhere that he still can go skiing, amazing guy, great driver at CART and with Tirsmo cars, never a great one at F1.

  • To Clarify

    This was a Champ Cars race in Germany at the Superspeedway there. Tagliani hit Zanardi - who lost both legs. There was about 14 laps to go and Zanardi came back a few years later and finished the race in a specially adapted car - his lap times quicker than some of the drivers in the race that weekend. Tag still races in Champ cars.

    this crash rivals the 1 of greg moore, but this 1 looks way worse, if u look closely he car is split in half, i woudlt like 2 live with the guilt of driving that car into zinardi tho

    BTW, this is NOT F1!!! This is either CART or IRL, F1 does not race on Ovals in America, they race on road courses throughoug the world, including the road course at the Indianapolis Speedway. Get your facts straight please.

  • He still races.

    He survived. Lost both legs. Long recovery, but now races a BMW in--I think--the European Touring Car Championship. Specially rigged for him so he can accelerate and brake on the steering wheel. He is still very competitive.

  • This crash lead to intense saftey issues...

    I can't remember wheather or not he survived, but I do know that when he was pulled off the track, his legs were gone due to the way the other car struck him.

      I think ALEX is a man of honour..and a true race car driver / lover....his love for racing is so intense that he is still racing and was driving / testing an F1 BMW-Sauber (modified) ....in 2006!!!!!!

      Thanx to BMW who keep the spirits up and still have humanity left!!!!
