All the alkali metals react with water to produce elementary hydrogen and the corresponding alkali hydroxides. The reactivity increases with increasing periodic number. The reactions2 Na + 2 H2O ----> 2 NaOH + H22 K + 2 H2O ----> 2 KOH + H2I got lucky with this sodium reaction, I have never had such a perfect explosion.

  • this is awesome, but...

    This is a great video. Can you do it again, but have the camera on a tripod instead of a human? I can still appreciate the excitement without having the camera shake.

    Also, what indicator are you using with the potassium? Is that just universal indicator?

  • Try...

    Some of the higher alkali metals, like cesium or francium =) You will need to go outside for those, though...

    • Actually,

      those are so reactive that they go off before much hydrogen has built up, resulting in more of a fizzle than a boom.

    • .

      the only problem is that those are extremely hard to come by. people know EXACTLY what your going to try to do with it too.

  • Lol

    We did that in 9th grade at school, we decided to put a huge dose of the sodium in a pond outside school to freak people out;P

    Reminds me of Chemistry class with Mr. Boomer 40 years ago.

  • Better

    This one is better than 'test in fire'. It is showing th most interesting characteristic of s1 and s2 elements... Replace water with H2SO4 is much more fun, though:-)

      Johnny was a little snot
      but Johnny ain't no more;
      For what he thought was H2O
      was H2SO4.
