All the alkali metals react with water to produce elementary hydrogen and the corresponding alkali hydroxides. The reactivity increases with increasing periodic number. The reactions 2 Na + 2 H2O ----> 2 NaOH + H2 2 K + 2 H2O ----> 2 KOH + H2 I got lucky with this sodium reaction, I have never had such a perfect explosion. More»

  those are so reactive that they go off before much hydrogen has built up, resulting in more of a fizzle than a boom.
