Hey, I submitted this clip and from South Africa as well, the Lion is this film is called Melto, there are two males hunting together which is rare, the other one is called Rayo and they hunt Hyena's, for fun apparently....

A group is hyenas, from 5-90 members, is called a clan. And is led by one alpha female, called the Matriarch. There's a social heirarchy where the females are dominant, followed by the cubs, then adult males. The females are the aggressive ones that you see stealing the lion's food.

So this movie is cool but all you're seeing is a male Lion taking on one or two female Hyenas. What probably really happend after the end of this clip is the clan regrouped and brought some more numbers and chased the Lions away. Or killed them.

Hyenas are also much smarter than lions. Some scientists claim they rank among apes as far as intelligence.

I saw this clip on the National Geographic channel, and the aftermath of this clip is actually the hyenas eating the dead hyena that the male lion killed.

If you notice, in so many clips lions eat kill while hyenas just schmooze along in the background, waiting for scraps. An obvious observation: They really don't want to tussle with the lion pride because they know the outcome, even if they outnumber the lions 90 to 20. In the rare occurence when a female lion or two has straggled away, the hyena pack will experience a moment of bravado, as you saw when the two female lions climbed on a fallen tree for safety. Those lions will be reherded; they won't be left alone for long. To finish this off, I want to explain a key point: lions do not kill hyenas for food. When you see a lion attacking a hyena, it is because of encroachment. The lion has simply had enough and will destroy as many hyenas as it takes in order to get a point across, but it is usually the offending hyena(s) that pay the ultimate price. While hyenas do have a fierce jaw and excellent bone-crushing power, they aren't even recognized as a natural enemy to a lion, and with good reason -- even with a 4-1 ratio, the lion is going to prevail.

If you notice, hyenas are and will be a fierce opponent to the lions. In fact, if you research, it is the lions that scavenge more off of hyena kills than vice versa. Hyenas kill apporximately 95% of their own kills and have a successful hunt rate of about 50-60%. On the other hand, lions have only a 25% success hunt rate.

Now, regarding their relationship, it is often the hyenas that are provoked by the lions. Also, I've read from Haan's Kruux's famous book "Spotted Hyena, Social Behavior and Predation" that a pack of 6 hyenas is capable of killing a full grown male lion (that is if their lives were on the line). The only thing that hyenas fear are the full grown male lions....and there is a good reason since prime male lions are 3X's larger and 2 X's stronger than matriarch hyenas. Yet, there are some incidents where even hyena cubs will bite and snatch at full grown male lions....even though the cubs are going to die.

Yet, it must be noted that hyenas do not fear lionesses and subadult male lions. You should definetely watch and read some documentaries regarding their behavior towards lions. If pride male lions are present....the hyenas will most likely retreat due to the risk of injury....however, if there are only subadult male lions and lionesses, the hyenas usually come out on top.

Zooligists have watched this relationship for years and liken it to human behavior as these two species actually do hate each other, prompting the male lions to track and kill for the sake of killing a hated enemy, not just encroachment or interference with food!

Don't schmooze in the back ground they muscle their way in, don't get me wrong i love lions alot more that hyenas but they're not as soft as you think they have a bite 3 times stronger than a lion but obviously nowhere near as strong so one on one the lions kick arse!!

The lions would have to figure out how to systematically separate and kill off hyenas to win out in the end. Sounds like a job for humans. Who else is intelligent and cooperative enough to do that, hyenas?

and that's why you see them killing hyenas. It's the only reason. To them, hyenas are more of a nuisance than anything else. Please view this clip in the proper context, because it can appear to present some sort of rivalry that just isn't there. Hyenas are intelligent opportunists, and lions are the ultimate hunting machine. That's where their bond begins and ends, and if lions found hyenas to be tasty, you wouldn't see a gathering of hyenas at a (lion) kill site. That's what gives them the confidence to stand there and wait it out.

Lions will kick some hyena ass! and the end where that male lion killed 2 hyenas was righ thing to do. i hope the lions make their own "gang" and goes to hyena hunt!

There is a reason why lions run away when a clan of hyena's want a lion's catch. Cause if they didnt run away, theyd be food too. 1 on 1 yea the hyena probably isnt gonna win, but a lion would almost never find themselves in a situation 1 on 1 with a Hyena. But i kinda want to see the end of that video cause that last clip with the hyena and the male lion, kinda looked like the hyena was winning, even though she was a third his size. I mean the hyena's bite force is like 4 times that of a lion so it would have only taken one good bite and that lion would be in trouble, and it looked like the hyena was on top and was goin for the lion's neck. All I can say is for the lion's sake I hope that hyena's buddies didnt decide to come over.

there would be a lot of skinny lions out there, wouldn't there? Lions do not get up and leave a kill until they choose to. It's that simple. Take a look again and you'll see that hyenas definitely understand there relative place in the food chain.

If u watch any National Geograpic special they always say the lions are forced to eat their catch real fast before the hyenas pick up the scent, because once they arrive there wont be any more eating for them. Every special I see, the lions rarely hold the hyenas at bay for very long. Most often the lions run away like the ones climbing the tree in that video to try and hide from the hyenas. And when they do fight it usually ends bad for the lions not the hyenas. Im not saying a hyena is stronger than a lion but hyenas can be in clans as large as 100, when odds are 5 to 1, im sorry but lions are getting the hell away. Ive seen 1 hyena scare a lion away, just because they act confident and lions dont usually, so 5 on 1 is over.

Well if you think that the hyenas would win, then your not very smart at all! I mean yeah If about a 100 people were charging me and 5 of my friends. Then hell yeah im gonna run too! Same with the lions. But lets take those 100 hyenas and lock them up all except for 6 of them then put them face to face with 6 lions. Then whos gonna win? I mean come on! Actually hyenas can overtake a lion if they work together in a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio (if the lion is younger). The fact that you don't see the encounters often is because many hyenas are cowards or cautious (either way works). But once the hyenas gain some confidence and get in the moment, they will work together to steal as much meat from the lions considering their numbers. Also, hyena's jaw force is greater than the leopard. I don't know about the comparison between the lion about that part though.

Actually, no. Hyenas are far too small (120 pounds at the largest) when compared to even the smallest female lions, which can weigh in at nearly 250 pounds. This isn't even showing the Male lion, which can weigh upwards of 500 pounds. Hyenas have incredibly strong downforce bite, yes, but they also have virtually no offensive capabilities. They have short stubby legs, cannot climb trees, and have weak claws. This is why they are group scavangers, and not hunters. Hyenas, even a large group, cannot kill a lion. Perhaps if it is injured or sick, but not a fully-developed adult cat. The lions are simply too aggressive (much more aggressive than the Hyena; Hyenas only have numbers), and too large for the Hyenas. The Hyenas (due to their decent intelligence levels) also know that they will find prey somewhere else, rather than risking death at the hands of a lion.

Of course the Lion has an incredible bite. It lives in the Savanna, where all the creatures are very hardy and tough. Also, if you saw, its canines are huge, allowing it to pierce the skin of even that of an elephant. Also, a single well-placed blow with its striking paw can heavily injure an adult Hyena or Human.


Again, whoever said that Lions are "stronger" than Tigers is an idiot. Lions are lean, fast, and much smaller than Tigers. Tigers can weigh in at nearly 700 pounds, with the largest nearing 1,000. Tigers have much more powerful muscles (unlike the idiot who said that lions do), and have been seen carrying a 50kg (110 pound) peice of meat and jumping a 2 meter (7 foot) fence. Tigers are built for extreme strength, whereas the Lion is built for speed and agility. The Tiger hunts large, slow-moving creatures, whereas the Lion hunts quick, small grazing prey. They simply cannot be compared; but I do not think that they would ever attack one another because they know each others' strength, and that death for one would almost certainly occur.

All in all, Hyenas will not risk death, because they are simply too cowardly. Just like in humans, the smallest humans usually need to "hunt" in groups, because one-on-one they would certainly be destroyed.

First of all....hyenas are considered on par with some apes in regards to intelligence. Hyenas also have a very powerful neck that can not only support it's weight but it gives the extra force needed to bite.

I can't believe you said that hyenas are cowardly b/c they do not want to risk death. On the same token, the lionesses were cowardly to run away and to not risk death when the hyenas were attacking.

And one more thing....hyenas are HUNTERS....they kill more than lions....it is the lions who steal from the hyenas than vice versa......hyenas have a higher hunting success rate than lions.....I suggest you do some research b4 posting remarks like you just did.

Your right....when the male lion was attacking the hyena....the other 2 hyenas came to the aid of the matriarch hyena and bit the male lion. The male lion was forced to let go of the matriarch and chased the other hyenas.

If you don't believe me on this, go see "Eternal Enemies" by National Geographic. It's funny how the clip ends before the other 2 hyenas come to the aid.....so Pro-Lion.

I don't think the Hyena was ever winning, if you noticed on the 1st attack, the male lion also rolled on it's back, once that cat has a hold of it's prey, they will roll over on it's back and start clawing at it with it's hind paws, even domestic cats do it, it gives them an advantage of all 4 paws and there teeth, surely at the beganing the female lions were far out numbered, even noticed a young male in there, the male lion does not hunt, it's only purpose is to breed and protect it's pride, also if you noticed when the male approched the kill, that Hyena took one look at him and was gone, the other's in the back ground didn't even get involved, they knew there would be playing with fire, 9 times out of 10 if a Hyena kills a lion, is because it's a lonner or it's sick or lame, there really no match with the power of the king of beast, in africa anways, now what would be a really interesting match up is a siberian tiger against an african lion, hhhmmm!!!

If you see the entire clip....the 2 hyenas come back and attack the male lion. It was edited to show the lion winning......lot's of lion lovers and hyena haters in this world.

If you actually watch the last fight you can see that the hyenas head is in the lions mouth!! So obviously the hyena is not winning!!!

You can also see, if you watch closely, that the hyena is actually trying to escape the claws and jaws of the lion but the lion keeps holding it back with its paws and tries to get a good bite.

common, i know tigers are the biggest of the big cats but lions have far bulkier frames with much higher ratio of muscle, plus bigger jaws, lions are made for sheer power, tigers are a mixture of agility and strength hence great climbing ability. as for hyenas, they only win because they outnumber lions and are a pain, if it came to the crunch lions would win everytime....yeah im biased because hyenas are ugggglyyyyy!

While lions have been considered the king of the jungle because of their manes and other factors, the tigers are on a whole different level. While, they don't go in groups and act solo 1 siberian tiger oversizes and overtakes 1 african lion. There is no argument. If you research more about the tigers, they have more strength and bulk than the african lion. Yes, 1vs1 encounters with lions and hyenas, would always mean a victor to the lion. But, that's not how nature works.

Anyways... this video is a misconception. Hyenas are actually the true hunters and more often than not, it is the lions that steal THEIR kills, believe it or not. Lions are lazy and will take every opportunity to steal a kill and they bully cheetas and hyenas around. It is just that hyenas are portraid differently by us and we all got the attitude that they are sly and sleezy opportunists when it is actually the other way around.

Any day a lion could kick a hyenas ass!! 1 on 1 it doesnt matter if they are both females. The ony thing hyenas have is that there like a bunch of mexicans! So say Im gonna take on a mexican 1 on 1. ok guys, great conversation you guys having so far, but it started to piss me off lol, i watched this clip like about 20 times now!, i know its pethatic. The female lions weren't that many that night in the clip, so that kinda wasn't fair for the female lions, there were more hyenas then the female lions, they obviously can't go against that many, but they did the best they could to defend them selves! credit for that. Now the LION KING steps in, as you guys see in the clip, all the hyenas get all scared shitless from the lion king, and the rest of them just set back and watch one of the hyenas die, now can you explain that one to me, hyenas are bytches, all they do is get more of them and try to pick on the little female lions, i mean come on, look at them run away when lion king comes home, and think about this, i will say this, 5 lion kings against 20 hyenas, who do you think will win, you guys know the answer to this big time!, its all about being fair in the battle, and thats why they call him Lion KING of the DESERT, no one can ever beat the lion king...

There is another documentary, called "Hyenas at War" and "Walking with Lions" where in the former, a male lion was severely crippled by a pack of hyenas and in the latter, 2 subadult lions attacked a lion hyena. THe lone hyena crushed the paw of one of the male lions and it severely crippled him to the point of death. The hyena escaped the attack from 2 subadult male lions....can you beat that motherfuckers?

The other hyenas did come to help her but the idiot who edited the clip did not include that part. It's so damn biased........

I agree. This was a National Geographic subject. The amount of work, patience and dedication that was required to produce is probably unimaginable to most of us. The filmmakers probably are compensated at levels that most of would probably leave most of us starving. So Mr. Lowe can add music that wasn't his to out-of-context film clips that weren't his and somehow feel that he has done something creative.

I have the documentary "Lions and Hyenas Eternal Enemies" on video, and both of the songs "Sabotage" and "Smack My Bi**h Up" on CD, but watching the video, then listening to the music would not come close to watching this clip. Sure, it was other people who shot the video and created the music, but this guy's combination of the two did create something that has got the blood of many people pumping. He ain't claiming to be the musician or cameraman, nor charging money for the show, so thanx for the entertainment!
