Thsi should probably be called the three phase of water. It all started as a students question, "Can you show us the triple point for water? Can you boil ice water?" Well I didn't have the equipment to actually do it. I came up with this. It is not really the triple point but it is creative. You can boil ice water. You just need to watch the movie to see how.
Heat the bottom see what happens.

yes its a bad video to demonstrate the triple point of water (as it takes place at 611.73 Pa and nearly 0 degrees Celcius), nonetheless the triple point does exist... Johnnyboy1006's comment about the vacuum is right, as it is required to drop the pressures enough to do this.
by holding the ice at the bottom. the heat never touched there. if the ice would have been floating, it would have melted. simple physics

By bmvik 1187680199 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe metal ball is not sheilding the heat of the flame from the ice (effectivly). Most metals are conductors, which means heat will transfer easily through it. so that means in the experiment, its like the ball wasnt even there. but what the ball was supposed to do was keep the ice down from floating into the flame. the reason the ice didnt melt was because heat rises, meaning the hottest water in that tube was at the top, and coldest at bottom.

I know that it's not REALLY the triple point of water, but i thought it was a very good "look" or example of it.
Now, if we could just make it useful, like for powering a car or something, that would be awsome.lol
the metal ball divides the heat and cold. it mediates between boiling water & the ice, that's why it is possible ..
By bumbleebee13x 1194668300 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe triple point of water is when it's boiling, freezing, and liquid at the same time.
The water has to be in a vacuum so it boils even when it's cold. then you cool it until it starts to freeze. That's the real triple point.
I was terrible at college chemistry and even I know that....
