Why isn't there any type of jetwash effecting the people standing directly under the plane, i mean its got to be only ten feet above the people there. any amateur scientists on here wanna explain this to me please?
Plane is a lot higher than 10 feet.

Over 20 flys in to Princess Julianne airport daily. We love to float in the water when the planes are landing, the waves are big. Only once there was a landing issue where the plane came down to low and hit the 12 foot chain link fence. I remember back 7 years ago when it was only small planes flying into St. Maarten, except for the enormous Air France planes. Around 4pm, when the planes depart the airport, that is when you want to get away from the beach area. Air France turns on those jets for take off and the whole beach area gets sand blasted.
yes it does efect only if you are at the divisor from the airport and the road beacause they fly actualy quite high to do the efect those for security reasons
Lift AND drag are at their MAXIMUM in landing and take off configurations. What you get are extreme wing vorticies (little tornados) They will drift away if there is a wind, or they will, in fact reach the ground; there is a delay, however, as they settle to the ground.
The turbulance would be felt a little, small vortex. but you would have to follow directly in the wake to experience the jetwash. The plane was very low but the people were still out of it's wake, mostly. The thrust of the engines would be felt more but as this plane was about to touch down the thrust would be low but noticable. The fun really starts when the plane takes off.
When the aircraft is landing (as seen here), the engine thrust is considerably low; thus, the wake turbulence is mostly ineffective towards the onlookers. As said, take-offs (~102% throttle) are a different story.
there probably would have been, but only to a very limited amount. on landing the engines are throttled right back and so jetblast is only evident if you're literally right behind the exhausts. i work at a major international airport and have regularly stood behind idling 747's on the taxiways without experiencing even a hint of blast
The name of the airport is Princess Juliana, which is located in the Netherland Antilles. The Runway starts literally right at the fence, so the landing is a good one for heavy planes. A lot of 747s and A340s land there and have to land RIGHT after the fence because of the distance it takes them to stop.
Also, kudos to the pilots for landing there, seeing as how they have to make visual landings since the airport has no ILS
after viewing this video, i must say "at least i get to know" there is such a kind of airport in the world that you will need a ear-plug when go to St.Martin beach for a swim.....thanks, its a great video !
...an Air France 747 snagged that fence with his main gear and took several hundred feet of it down the runway with him...
As to why you don't see jetwash...the plane is travelling in the opposite direction from the jetwash, negating most of the power (relative to stationary people on the ground) in the exchange...plus the thottles are set low at this point, as was said.
When they take off from that runway, that whole beach gets jetwashed...you sometimes see people surfing OUT away from the beach in it...
its the dutch island of st maarten.
very cool bar right next to it on the beach. sunset beach bar.
when planes take off,you hold on to the fance and i mean hold on ( 747)
wear glasses , but it is a hell of a rush!!
I have seen numerous pictures of this beach and still have no idea where it is. Can someone tell me please so I can go there.....that was insane!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!
Saint Martin Island. Wikipedia has a great writeup about both the island and the airport itself. Check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Juliana_International_Airport
Wake turbulence flows off the ends of the wings. It forms counter-clockwise currents of air that dissipate down and away from the wingtips. If people were out from underneath the plane and further away they would feel it if the plane was lower. That plane is more than ten feet off the ground, so the wake turbulence has disappeared before it gets to them. They don't feel any blast from the jet engines because they're not standing directly behind the jet as it lands.
Yeah this was pretty insane..it landed not even on the runway start. Its at SXM (St Maarten). Check out how close it was. you can see the people at the fence ducking down. http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1078774/M/
This happens daily at Maho Beach, at the west end of Princess Juliana Airport. The Sunset Beach Bar just off the runway has a board with the flight schedules for the plane watchers. Truly cool experience. Standing there holding onto the fence during takeoff reminded me of the movie "Pushing Tin"!
And it's not true only small planes landed there. There were huge planes landing all day long, and most of them were American Airlines, not Air France.
This is actually my Mother-In-Law on her final approach to the Breakfast Bar at Bob Evans' Restaurant just outside of Bristol, VA, USA. I always get nervous when people stand that close, as she doesn't always land that well. There have been injuries.
It's the Princess Juliana airport in the island of St.Maarten ( or St. Martin) in the Caribbean. Half of the island is under Dutch jurisdiction, the other half is French. Nice place! The whole island is a Duty-free zone, great shopping, great beaches! lol...I miss it so much :(
if u go to google earth then u can see where it is but for sure it's not in holland (the netherlands) it's called st. maarten and is partly dutch. we (i am dutch) do have some islands but non of them do have landingstrips like this, they r to small for these type of airplanes, apart from schiphol ;).

Technically speaking when you are about to land a plane you might put it in idle or low thrust. When you are about to take-off you would put the throttle completely in so that the plane will take off

There is little jetwash when landing. Lift is and power are at their minimums when landing.
Hope this helps.

an aircraft was taking off there. The blast was directed to the beach and the people flew to the sea!!!
that was also a boeing 747

just because that was an outstanding editing job!
PS fly with KLM they give you free dutch bread and cheese onboard with juice and its SOOOOOOOOOOOOO tasty
Cant wait for the A380 to do the same :)

Where was that? Very close to nose...
21 sec / 31 sec.
only one inch and the jeep would now be screwed
So when are we going to join hands and ask the sky gods to stop this bad behavior?
Great place to fly a kite!
I think if the runway have the systeme ILS the pilot just doeing the job but if he land visual he can doeing better... verry verry low landing !!!
@ the water and ull see the efffect the turbulance/jetwash has.
How cool would that be?!!
WTF WHAT IF A FREAKIN TANKER TRUCK OR AN 18 WHEELER WAS AT THE FENCE!
XBrad Wrote: Chuck some sand in the air and boom! lmao that cracks me up thinkin about it one grain of sand hits those babies AND BOOM!
