Atomic Bomb 'Fat Boy' Dropped On Nagasaki

As horrible as those bombs were, it is a good thing that we dropped them. Face facts people, war is awful and you have to do awful things to stop them. A lot of people died from those 2 bombs, but a lot more would have died had we not dropped them. To invade Japan it would have costs thousands upon thousands of lives.
Japan started the war, so why should more American soldiers die in an invasion that could have lasted years when we had the ability to save those lives.

The objective in war is to kill the enemy before they kill you. Yes we can all be sympathetic to those that died and continue to suffer today from the aftermath, but we all must realize that in war you fight with the best of your ability, otherwise you risk the lives of your own soldiers and citizens

then why didn't you think about that before the US invaded Afghanistan and Iraq and killed thousand also by bombs and got lots of US soldiers killed too!!!

I guess then the guys who flew the planes right throught the WTC and killed all those innocent people weren't all that bad after all...they wanted revenge for all the palestinians and I guess others being killed by the aid of the US to Isreal and therefore the world came to realise that something called Palestine actually exist...well they turn out to have done a good cause if that's how you explain things!!!

I guess I should have been more clear. Japan's bombing of pearl harbor brought the U.S. into the war when it did. Hopefully you don't have any trouble comprehending that? I honestly don't know why you commented as you did. It should have been fairly obvious what I meant by "Japan started the war", and I'm at a complete lost why you say "man read the books and then talk..." when there clearly was no ignorance in any part of my statement.

He failed to use correct English when trying to pass himself off as 'educated'. It was a quick and hasty reply without much due thought. Though I can sympathise with his point that Japan as a nation was not alone in its greed to become an empire at a period in history in which world war was inevitable.

I think the only conclusion to World War II was the ability of the human race to vanquish the primary aggressors to the war at the time that they did, and that such advanced technology came after mutual global peace was later established and still relatively exists today.

The only way to defeat Japan was to drop the Atomic Bombs as a warning sign for them to accept defeat. The U.S Army was loosing the battles in a sense, they'd have to sacrifice a large platoon to defeat a small Japanese platoon.

If the U.S.A really wanted to end the war by bombings they could have used different bombs like napams that kill without creating genetic mutations.

Droping the 2 Atomic bombs is still affecting people 'til now there still kids born with mutations because of these bombs.

In my opinion droping the bombs was COWARDLY. The U.S.A was the first and only country to use A Bombs in War.

"truce to war" We did use things like napalm(due to intelligence of the flammable nature of japanese buildings), and we did attempt battle, we tried an incredible variety of tactics and experimental weaponry hoping that we would not have to resort to the Bomb.

The Japanese military was completely out of control (even from Japan) They had no intention of giving up, and so America did something that they could not ignore.

It's sad, yes, and awful. The reason it is not so badly looked upon is due to how much worse it could have been.

Ultimately, the reason we attacked in the first place was because they thought by bombing pearl harbor they could buy the time they needed to get oil from the south, imagine the cost of life if they had wound up with the resources to continue their war on China.

And finally, read a personal account of the napalm bombings in China. Those are some of the most horrific stories you will ever read, the bomb was a blessing in the immediacy by comparison, and the after effects of radiation were too unknown at the time to blame them now.

I love Japan, I am going on the study abroad program there next summer, and intend on one day living there. But I still have to defend the dropping of those bombs. Honestly, how many more people would have died in a land invasion of Japan? By demonstrating such raw power in those 2 bombs, many lives were saved by bringing a close to the war

I am a Japan enthusiast... An ex-Japanese language teacher and a current resident of Japan with a Japanese spouse... I am Australian... and I agree totally with the previous writer.. The facts and figures are correct and I totally believe the bomb put an end to Japans massacre spree... The war started long before America entered it... The war started for Chinese people in the 1930's when millions of civillians were massacred in NANKING (Google "The R**e of Nankin")... the massacre was called such because it was an absolute R**e of the nation... women were raped and murdered after being mutilated and experimented on... millions and millions of them... Men were forced to R**e their daughters before having their genitals removed and shoved down their throats until they choked... need I go on... These attrocities have to be remembered or else they will be repeated... Japan today is nothing like Japan of the last century... I hold nothing but utmost respect and love for Japan and its people... but the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the best things that happened to this country (in the big picture)... Please don't start whining about the hundred thousand deaths.... Let's think about the hundreds of millions saved and the tens of millions that we didn't save because we dropped the bomb 15 years after the war really started ! I have visited GENBAKU DOME (Atomic Dome), the remnants of the community hall in Hiroshima at ground zero and I have sat thru countless testimonies of survivors and their families and I have shed many tears.. I feel sorry for the individuals, but I see the big picture and you should too.

Look at the number of people already dead and who would have died if we had not dropped them. Is killing over a hundred thousand people bad? Yes

If we chose not to use the bomb we would have been choosing those millions of deaths.
If you have a gun and you see some one with a bomb strapped to them heading into a building and you choose not to murder them. You have chosen to let all those people die.

Yes people should visit the memorials but not just those any of the war memorials to remember how bad the war was. That was by far not the worst the happened during the war. Just the flashest.

How is what happened to those two cities any worse then all the fire bombed city. Oh instead of hundreds of planes dropping bombs it was just 1 plane and 1 bomb. More people died instantly with that attack. If I had a choice between being in a fire bombed city or a nuked city I would pick the nuked city. I mean I don’t think killing 1000 people with a knife is any better then dropping a bomb on them.

I think killing less people and having less crippled for life is more humane. I don't see how another year or two of fire bombing and landing troops would be more humane. I always though finding a way to end a war with less people dead and wounded was a good thing. I guess I am wrong I guess I was wrong. We should have fire bombed those cities. It would have still killed as many people but it would have taken longer and they would have died in more pain. We also would have had to fire bomb a lot more cities, and land ground troops.

People forget now what war was. WW2 was a war of attrition. Who can kill the other side faster then they can get new troops. Destroying entire cities was done by every country.

I am a radiation worker and have to do all the training on it. I have seen the training videos on pretty much ever incidents from the atoll tests we did the army reactors mess up the Chernobyl thing. I have read classified reports on ever nuclear incident in the US as well.

I still look at the numbers and if you included the people who die and suffer from the birth defects and after effects you get less dead and suffering from the bomb. That is my point.

It has been a lot less then a century and the environment has recovered just fine from that. About the only nuclear incident that has had a noticeable long term effect on the environment in Chernobyl. An atomic bomb creates a lot of radiation but leaves very little radio active material. So if you do not get a high dose from the blast or shortly after before is disperses you will be fine.

You do realize there is a park at ground 0 right. They said at the time the environment would not recover for a century. But then it did and they built a park. At the time they said all these doom and gloom things about bombs that in the 60 years since then we have realized were wrong.

Birth defects today????? Have you read the studies. You do realize they have tracked the birth records of the bomb victims and their offspring right. There is nothing that shows any long term genetic damage. Yes first generation their where a lot of birth defects. But after that then number of birth defects is the same as the normal population everywhere else. Yes at the time they though that they would be messed up for generations to come. That is why they are still today tracking the birth and heath records of those people. No one is yet to find a trend that points to long term genetic problems. You need to look at current facts instead of basing you option on 60 year old speculation. I know in the movies and politicians like to bring up the 60 year old speculations, but they have nothing that binds them to be accurate.

You are the one who sounds naïve you need to do some more current research on the affects of radiation and radioactive material. While you are at it go to ground 0 in the two cities. Take a radiac with you. You will see there is no notable difference in background radiation there compared to a park in another country.

that it would be good for everyone to visit such a place. It would help ensure that such things are never used again. I disagree, however with the notion that the bombs were not needed. I truly believe the Japanese would have fought to the last in infantry style combat. When the U.S. showed them their cities could be incinerated from afar, the dynamics of the fight were changed and the choice bacame surrender or extinction without the possibility of inflicting casualties on the enemy.

That's like saying an American city deserves bombing because of something our own government did that pissed another country off. There is no justifying that. And the war was already over- Japan was coming up with a way to lose the war gracefully. It wasn't necessary, and those people were used as human experiements by those with itchy trigger fingers. Look up 'Hiroshima' and see for yourself- numerous highly respected Americans knew it wasn't necessary to bomb them.

Everyone seems to forget every country in WW2 carpet bombed cities. Carpet bombing a city kills the same mix of civilians and military as nuking it. It just takes more planes and a little longer.

Now that we have guided missiles and can make precise strikes people forget that it used to be if a city had factories the entire thing got taken out. War is ugly and when fighting a war like that the most important thing is winning. Your second goal is to minimize losses on your side.

Now when we drop bombs they each have a target, but back then each plain targeted part of the city and poured out its bombs.

As much as people hate to say it America is depended on by many countries as America depends on other countries. America does NOT start all the Wars, America tries to stay out of war but is usually brought in because of "necessity" or "force". Be it to help out another country or is attacked. I would rather be in a nuked city then a fire bombed city. If you look at the damage from dropping the A-bomb it isn't that much worse then a lot of cities that where carpet bombed. It is just more sudden and only takes 1 plane. It is scarier but i don't see at as being any more inhumane then killing then same number of people with fire bombs.

It is nice 60 years later to talk about how bad something was, but I would make the same decision if it was my choice.

A lady at my church who is from Japan was skipping school the day the bomb was dropped. Every one in her school died she had burn scars. I don't see how what happened to her was any worse then a child who skipped school in a fire bombed city where the entire school died and that child had burn scars.

War S**ks . Don't try to pretend that England, Germany, or any European counties had great honor during World War 2. I am sure that the other countries that were researching the bomb just wanted it to put on a self and look pretty. I have misplaced them, the war or as many would say politically correct Police Action,VeitNam my mind wanders, it has been a saveing grace for i am able to dwell on different things at once so i kinda see a better veiw over all all the time. I think some of these people who post comments here go way too far but I do how ever think that if the US didn't create the "bomb" or for that matter use it in the past, I don't think I'd like to live today but then again I don't think I would have been given any chance or choice. Since we are in the here and now, we should erradicate them now permanently and if the powers that be have a clue on the preservation of life but still think that wars will always be around, then stop making weapons that go on killing after the fact. People die years later from burns after suffering from fire bombs. Mines still go off every once in awhile in Europe. Gas messes people up for life. I lodged bullet that cannot be operated on can shift and kill you later.

It is not like a nuclear bomb makes the land unlivable or something. It is not like it messes up future generations. Yes if you got h high dose of radiation from it you may get cancer later or die of radiation poisoning. Or if shortly after it drops you ingest the radioactive material you can get sick from that.

An air detonated nuclear device has no long term effects on future generations and no long term effects on the land it is dropped on. The only nuclear incident to have long term measurable environmental effect is Chernobyl. He like any others joined for an adventure but he didn't understand that doing so would change him forever, I see this evident in people who join the armed forces today, they face battle for the first time and few continue service after facing a battle. are you just accounting for military losses? Remember that if we had to invade mainland japan there would be a great deal of urban warfare...who knows how much loss of life there would have been to civilians, especially if they took on a fight to the death approach for everyone and not just their army. It was an unfortunate incident, one that would have been gladly avoided I'm sure, but like any war, Japan's leadership put their citizens in harms way. Just as US opened up many Americans to terrorist attacks both at home and abroad with its war on terror.

Japan had already lost 1.5 million soldiers. Do you think another 1-2 hundred thousand soldiers would have just made them give up? Are you that naive?

I don't think you realize the number of deaths in that war. Sure Japan had lost 1.5 million solders but they had about 5 million left and were recuting more.

Also if we were fighting them which conventional weapons those 2 cities would have been bombed and fire bombed. Each nuke took out about 1/3 of the city. How many cities were leveled in that war?

If we had to invade them make no mistake that meant millions more deaths on both sides. If you knew World War II history at all you would know this. More people would have probably died in those cities alone form carpet bombing then the nukes killed. They had factories they were going to get bombed one way or the other.

The only reason the surrendered without us taking every island one by one is the bomb scared them. We told them we had a terrible new weapon that they could not hope to fight against. They didn’t believe us so we used it and they surrendered. The only reason that worked is because they didn’t know it would be years till we would have enough fuel made for more of them. If they knew those were our only 2 bombs we would have still had to fight them and have lost millions of lives on both sides including millions of civilians.

This war killed over 60million people 3% of the population of the world at the time. Just think of that next time you doubt it lasting a few more years would result in less then a million deaths.

Even with the bombs only 600,000 Japanese civilians died. Yet this one act against 2 cities with factories at that, this one act that saved millions of soldigers on both sides as well as millions of Japanese civilians. That is worse then the millions of people the Japanese killed in prison camps and death camps? The millions of civilians they rounded up and killed.

did you know 50% of the deaths in world war 2 where allied civilians and 5% where axis civilians? That 50% is of the 62 million deaths.

Ok we killed 150,000 in 2 bombing runs on cities with industrial complexes that where turning out weapons. Yes this bomb was off target and did more damage to the city and less damage to the industrial part then we had hoped but still it ended the war so the factories not being completely taken out was not so bad.

Yes that is so much worse then the millions killed in German concentration camps, and the millions killed in Japanese death camps.
Some of the people who died in the German camps were being experimented on. Sure the info German got advanced us decades medically but I am sure those people would have rather died of radiation poisoning. It would have involved less suffering.

When you are at war people die. if it were considered murder then we would have to lock up all the soldiers. Casualties of war. I hate the idea of children dying or suffering but do you think there would have been any less without the bombs? It would have just been dragged out over another two or three years and would have been chinese, korean and philipino children. Oh and lets not forget all theorphaned children back here in america

maybe because iran and iraq have a very violent history and present, even in modern times, and I'm not talking about conventional warfare. I dont know about you, but I'm sure the people that were persecuted and mass murdered in Iraq by their own government would rather them not have nukes. The fact that even in conventional warfare we avoid collateral damage, using much more expensive guided weapons instead of cheaper dumb fire weapons should show that we're the least likely to abuse our weaponry. Not to mention we've never had leaders with nicknames such as "the butcher" in power!

Don't forget what everyone thinks of the current US president, in a few short years he's started 2 wars, more people were executed in texas when he was govenor than any other govenor in any other state in 200 years, and everyone seems to have caught on that he's not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed.

Ok so we have been brought into many of these wars or cam to the aid of others in nearly every conflict we've been involved in. Did we start a war to gain more territory? Did we start a war over religion or with the idea of mass genocide? Argue what you will about our willingness to fight, but most of our aid has been on the side that the UN has sided with...you know that world political organization? And the wars we started within the past 2 years...did you forget about 9/11? Afghanistans unwillingness to stop and in fact their support of terrorism is what makes things like that possible. Iraqs involvment you can doubt all you want, but at least they have a chance and a democracy instead of a psychotic tyrant (and yes he was crazy, read into his history). And those people that were executed in texas were CONVICTED criminals. Not people dragged out of their homes and murdered for talking against the US government or people who had religious beliefs only slightly different than our president. If you don't like the death penalty then fine, but capital punishment under George Bush has nothing to do with the US' outlook on war.

My father was a P.O.W., some of his friends were slave labour in the Nagasaki shipyards, The order had been given that if the Allied forces landed on the japanese mainland, all the prisoners were to be executed, and then all japanese, military, civilians, women, children, old people, all japanese were to fight to the death, and if defeat seemed likely, to kill themselves. On the islands this had already been seen, women leaping off the cliffs into the sea, holding their babies and young children.
Although it seems contradictory, these bombs saved many more lives than they took, and the first person to tell me that was a Japanese ex-officer who served in Nagasaki, at the time of the bomb.
Immediately after the bomb, the prisoners were sent out of the deep shelters and set to firefighting, and the collecting of bodies,- the bomb went off over the city, not the industrial complex, which was an error. My father's friend, Ted, died a couple of years ago, but I remember him weeping as he told of the horrors he had seen. The survivors had nightmares for the rest of their lives.
These bombs were terrible weapons, but they ended the war quickly, and saved countless lives throughout the far east.

how is killing thousands of japanese civillians better than killing thousands of soldiers? the only difference is that in convensional warfare, there would have been loses on both sides, not just civilians on one side.

not to justify the use of it, but when facing prolonged war for my own nation, as well as the loss of thousands of my own citizens who are also a large portion of my current and future work force not to mention the heart of my nations defense, I too may authorize the use of this. Dont get me wrong, the loss of life in Japan is terrible and any loss of life is a horrible thing. Though there would be a huge loss of life on both sides, not to mention that alot of citizens would die, in conventional warfare, and part of being a leader is safeguarding the safety and future of your people. I dont expect everyone to like the decision, but you can not deny its effectiveness and the other atrocities that were avoided by its use. Unfortunately we do not know how horrible the war could have been in japan, but if the war throughout the pacific is any indication, it would have taken both nations a very long time to recover from it.

This isn't meant as a criticism per se but you should be aware that the Western world and that of India views Islam with suspicion and distrust. It isn't just because of 9/11, contrary to what al Jazeera may say. It is becasue radical Muslims believe that only Islam is correct and everyone who will not convert must die. How come no one questioned it for more then a generation after it happened. Oh ya because they all knew that way more children, babies, old women, injured people, hospital patients, students etc would have died in and invasion.

Instead of under 200 thousand dead you would have millions dead. You would have women and children starving to death, dieing from nerve agents and blister agents because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

World War 2 was horrible. Millions died.

Before we dropped the bomb Japan alone had over 1.5 million solders dead. They also had over 400 thousand civilian deaths before the bombs. We where not to the main land yet this was from fighting it the pacific.

In World War 2 over 36 millions civilians died and over 24 millions solders died. To end the war and save millions of solders and civilians they made a decision that took the life of 200 thousand civilians. That is not even 1% of the civilian deaths for the war. That is only a few percent of the civilians that would have died if we had not dropped them.

So killing more people makes sense to you? Not only 36 millions of civilians but 200 thousand more? WOW!! Never thought of that. Now I wonder if US would have stopped fighting if they had received that bomb instead of Japan.

show some respect for those who fought in the two world wars not to mention Korea Vietnam the gulf wars afganistan and many other wars!!!!!!!!!
