  • Snippet of info.

This wasn't supposed to happen at the end of this scene, but because Harrison Ford had had an upset stomach for 2 days, delaying the filming, the script was shortened. Hence the quick ending instead of a full blown fight (apparently it was Harrison's own idea).

    • yeah

if that was nowadays, indy would have just dropped a cluster bomb on the town from a few thousand feet and killed everyone, i see your point ;-)

    • Find a single news article of a cluster ...

      civilians.

Indiana Jones was made in the 1980s, back when two world superpowers were pointing nukes at each other. Our strategy back then was Mutually assured destruction (MAD) and it was not a joke. Schools held bombing drills, and our military commanders contemplated causing nations to disappear from the face of the earth. The War in Viet Nam has just ended with the many atrocities committed on both sides. Civilians killed intentionally, but never officially… and before that was worse not better…

Before that, during the 30s and 40s entire cities were destroyed in massive bombing campaigns and other attacks. The "Total War" idea was embraced by strategists on both sides of WW2. Firebombing was very successful at killing entire cities in Germany. In the bombing of Hamburg the British managed to create a firestorm which produced hurricane force winds and killed more than 40,000 civilians. Many were killed from asphyxiation as the fire burned up all the oxygen. At least 35,000 civilians were killed in the bombing of Dresden. In Japan the light wooden structures in cities burnt exceptionally well. We experimented with different mixes of high explosive and fire bombs for best effect. Explosives would splinter the wood and hamper the relief possibilities - then the fire would be free to spread. These fires created their own weather patterns - feeding themselves with air. The blazes were so powerful they would melt the streets and the wind from the suction they produced would pick up people and throw them through the air. 100,000 civilians were killed in the firebombing of Tokyo. The B-29 crews had to wear oxygen masks to keep from vomiting from the smell of burning human flesh. More than 60 other Japanese cities suffered similar fates. Between 100,000 and 200,000 civilians were killed with the Atomic bombs. This is saying nothing of the atrocities the Japanese committed during the invasion of china and the pacific. This says nothing of the Russian front (such as during the 900 day siege of Leningrad), or of the bombing of London and other British cities. The Germans also bombed Warsaw and Rotterdam during the opening months of the European side of WW2, along with other European Cities.

    • Then and now...

Now we have guided munitions that can fly hundreds of miles and go through the correct window in the correct building. Every single weapon in the US inventory is linked to state of the art targeting systems. Sometimes civilian deaths are unavoidable. We have wars and conflicts happening in the very midst of busy cities. But American soldiers take great pains every day to keep civilians out of the line of fire. They don't use high explosive munitions unless they can designate clearly the enemy positions and will not unduly endanger civilian lives.

If you want to find the indiscriminate killers of today why don't you look at the bomber who boards a civilian buss and detonates a bomb specifically meant to kill civilians – or a thousand attacks like this. Or, how about you look at the one where men board planes and use them to knock down civilian skyscrapers - killing thousands of civilians both on the planes and in the buildings. … or think about the people bombing busses in London… or trains in Spain…

THERE ARE NO GOOD OLD DAYS. WE ARE BETTER THAN WE EVER WERE BEFORE. NO AMERICAN COMANDER WILL EVER ORDER A STRIKE TO KILL CIVILIANS AGAIN. WE HAVE NOT DONE SO IN ANY WAR FROM THE 90s ON. SO F**k OFF UNTILL YOU HAVE SOMETHING INTELIGENT TO SAY.

    • I care

Maybe you do too. That is why you read my note and decided to reply with an articulate and knowledgeable response.

Read the notes I was responding to and you will see the connection. I don't like to let people think they can just say any stupid thing that pops into their head without being made to look like idiots for sharing their stupidity. If you think you have any evidence to discredit my views on history and current news, please let your knowledge enlighten me. Otherwise, STFU.
