To our Norwegian colleague: If your country can't AFFORD better plains or have the Intelectual infrastructure to develop your own, don't badmouth the technology you bought from the US. The 130 is a old plane, and it's a big pile of noisy, shaking, squeaking shit. But it can take a hell of a beating and still stay airborne. It's built to last more or less.

I had many hours as passenger to Kosovo in this baby.. And if i want to complain about the plane i will. because i have a right to after experiencing that torture.. I don't care if it's US or Russian it stinks.

Oh my god no a cargo plane that squeaks. Now we know why Pan Am does not use them for passenger transport. They were built to be tough not nice. I believe the gunship in the video is called a spectre. came out in vietnam war.

The gunship in the video is, indeed, a Spectre. They're gradually being replaced by an upgraded version called "Spooky". The Spooky sports 40mm cannon in place of the 7.62mm mini-guns to give it extended range and punch. The 40mm cannons are made by Bofors, a Swedish firm.

The airframe has been flying for 50 years now and many of them do squeak and groan (they also leak hydraulic fluid from the aeileron rod which is disconcerting when you're sitting under it wearing a parachute--I know that first hand), but it's been an extremely durable and flexible airframe. I don't know if it still holds this distinction, but at one time (recently, not 50 years ago), it held the disctinction of having the least accidents per flying hours of any aircraft.

When you're out on ops and it's just you and 11 other guys with bad guys all around, nothing is more comforting than having an AC-130 at your beck and call.

The AC-47 "Spooky" was replaced by the AC-130 "Spectre". Currently, the Air Force has no plans of replacing the spectre gunships, although they do modify them from time to time. The AC-130H does have 2 7.62mm miniguns capable of laying out a combined 8000-12000 rounds per minute (4000-6000 rpm each) It also carries the 40mm cannons, as well as 25mm, and the large chunck of steel sticking out near the rear of the plane is a 105mm howitzer.

The name "Spooky" does indeed harken back to the C-47 gunship. And the Air Force is not replacing the AC-130, they're upgrading them to a new configuration under the new (old) name Spooky.

Do a little research. This damn website won't let me type in URLs (They're "words" longer than 15 letters) but go to Google and type in "spooky, ac130". You'll discover that the Air Force has resurrected the name "Spooky" and assigned it to an upgraded version of the AC-130 Spectre.

I'll let you off the hook now, just promise me you'll do 30 seconds research on the internet next time.

And I will shortly be enjoying a meal of my own words. Apparently the Air Force is, indeed, revamping the AC-130 platform to the AC-130U from the H model. Thanks for the update, and I mean that with all sincerity.

You did not come across too strong, I assure you. I was, however, slightly disappointed in myself for not keeping up with current advances in modern military aviation! I must be slipping! Too much time doind research for my next dissertation I suspect!!!
I would assume from your screen name that you, too, are a veteran of some military service? The term Snakeeater si usualy reserved for those who have been there and done that. While, if you are what I suspect you are, I have not been to the places you have been while you were there, I would assume I was there shortly after your arrival. I was on what is known as a "Cleanup Crew" It was my teams (Combat Recovery) job to bring home those members of our teams who paid the price. If you are what I think you are, thank you. If you are using the screen name to pay tribute to those who did the job, thank you still.

I've been around a bit, but nothing to brag about. I was in the US Army's 10th Special Forces Group and spent time on A teams as a radio operator. SF guys are dersively referred to as "snakeeaters" by conventional Army types. I entered it as a screen name on a whim and it stuck. I certainly don't envy your job in Combat Recovery, though.

Kind of depressing at times, but nothing compared to the guys we were there for. I met a few team members on one of our sweeps. Not at all what I was expecting. I wish I'd had the chance to spend more time with the ones who were still draggin the chains rather than the fallen. I did make some really good friends in the crew though. Amazing how something like that will form friendships that will last in only a few days...

Why do you think even our children (who are most influenced by culture) are murdering eachother in our schools and our crime rates are so high? Our culture tells us not to love our fellow man, but to hate him and figure out how to make his livelihood your own, or how to exploit him for your own benefit. Freedom is given only to those with the monetary or political power to exercise it because these same powers stifle it for everyone else. The USA is not inherently evil, but is corrupted by power and gross overindulgence.
