Philip Johnson Glass House Opens In New Canaan, Connecticut - World Renowned Architectural Landmark Now Available For Public Tours
One of the most important houses ever built in America is actually a house of glass. Built in New Canaan, Connecticut in 1949 by architect Philip Johnson, the Glass House quickly became a critically acclaimed icon of modern design - - - and now it is a public museum, operated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Visitors can now see not only the Glass House, but also many other structures that Johnson built from 1949 until his death in 2005. Together with a world class collection of modern art that he assembled with his partner David Whitney, the experience of the Glass House is a dramatic lesson in modernism.
The Glass House Civic Opening Celebration will be held June 21, 2007 at 10:00 am as the official opening of the Philip Johnson Glass House, a National Trust Historic site, for the first time in its 50+ year history. The opening ceremony will include remarks by Richard Moe, President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation; Paul Goldberger, National Trust for Historic Preservation Trustee; Connecticut Lt. Governor, Michael Fidele; and modern preservation leaders Jens Risom and Julius Shulman (legendary architectural photographer), among many others.
