    that you should cough really hard and breathe heavily if you're experiencing a heart attack. Can someone confirm?

    I had 3 stents inserted in my heart at the beginning of 07. My arteries were pretty blocked up. Considering i don't smoke, I coach a provincial rugby team and lead a healthy life i was really surprised. Most people that have a heart attack don't grab their chest etc. A tightness starts in your chest then you get short of breath and become very confused by your surroundings, generally if it's bad enough for you to grab at your chest and you collapse you are are probably going to be dead before you hit the floor.

    Sorry Kiwi but heart attacks have many many different symptoms. I expierenced none of what you did. So dont wait for some symptom to happen that you heard about. Yours will be unique.

  • many types of "heart attack"

    This type is a myocardial infarction, the heart or a part of it dies from lack of blood supply caused by one or more cardiac arteries being blocked. Other types involve the heart fibrillating or pumping in rapid uncoordinated spurts which does pump blood to the body. This is time to get the paddles out and yell clear. Yet another type involves cardiac myopathy in which the heart just wears out and stops pumping. All that stuff about taking aspirin etc. only works for the clogged artery type. Best answer to heart attack is to keep your cholesterol checked and get an EKG or more complete test if heart problems run in the family. While I'm on the subject, most cases of high cholesterol have nothing to do with diet so keeping it monitored and medicated if need be is the only real solution.

      oops typo, the comment should have said that when the heart goes into fibrillation it does NOT get blood pumped into the body, sorry. The electrical shock adminstered with the paddles debrillates the heart andstarts coordinated pumping again.
