filters natural light, and only let's through infrared light... So in effect, what you are doing, is making an infrared LED.

A remote control sends out a series of digital IR pulse codes which are programmed specificly to trigger different functions on the television. You would have a better chance of sending a fax by singing happy birthday over the phone. Ill post that one next week!

I did a project once where an IR receiving diode connected through a preamp was fed to the computers sound card and we recorded the resulting waveforms - and these were quite complicated for each of the keys (more like morse code- with a sequence of long and short pulses) - we than did the opposite, feeding the output from the computer to an IR LED, being able to control the TV and VCR with prerecorded 'macros'7008100 - hrm...
you know less than you think.
