He is just pissed because he knows deep inside he doesn't have what it takes to be a marine. so instead of complimenting their ability he mocks it to make himself feel better.

these drills are made to give the marine extra discipline and a cool mind in face of danger (I bet the knifes are real), which gives them an andvantage during combat

    • Of course the knives are real

I "twirled a rifle" a bit myself in the USAF on a base honor guard drill team. We weren't as good as those guys, but we had real jobs to do all day. Honor guard was ON TOP OF the 40-50 hour job I did so don't cry about your tax dollars. I also helped bury 300 veterans / retirees / active duty all over IN, MI, WI, IL, KY, TN, MO on TOP of my job which means I lost many many weekends so that families could have us put their war hero grandfather to rest, the 30 year retirees that gave their entire lives to service, the active duty that had fallen while serving.

Those guys will undoubtedly stare death in the face and stab it in the eyes more than once in their careers.

The practice and discipline to pull those maneuvers off is incredible. We used fixed bayonettes during performances and dress rehearsals. Sometimes people did get hurt, but hardly as much a risk as young soldiers take just crossing town in some places.

    • Honor Guard

I feel ya. I’ve been in the Air Force for 10 years, and have served on the base honor guard for almost as long (2 separate bases). Honor Guard is what you put into it, and I’ve always considered it an honor to be there for these families, and help them lay to rest their hero. I myself have been trying to develop a rifle drill team on this base honor guard. I’m the only one around here with any skills with a riffle, so it’s going a little slow. But were making progress. We should be ready for out first performance around mid-Dec. I’m the first to admit to my guys that I’m no were near that good, but as you said…that’s their job. 12 hours a day that’s all they do. If we had that time we’d be that good to.
Great comment, you really nailed. Take it easy

    • Thank you.

I hope I see you when my father passes away. Most people have no idea how close we came to WWIII during the 70's. The long hours that were put in keeping things prepared to the point it caused people to fear war. And we should be afraid of war.

Chimpanzees and children can learn skills; they can learn dicipline; and in fact skill and dicipline require practice. Also learning requires skill, dicipline and practice. Wow where am I going with this? Lets think? Oh yes Where does independant thinking, wisdom and leadership come into play here? Is it after the mental conditioning or does it ever actually occur?

By Ming The Merciless 1139551335 Reply Spam [-2] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • These drills are not about

independant thinking. They are all about training and dicipline. "Creating instinct," so to speak. For most people, indep. thinking should already exist. To even become a marine you already have to have wisdom and leadership, that's why they are "the few, the proud..." they don't take just anybody and they definately don't take sheep who only think they are people.

I'll no further dignify your assinine comments, save to say, were it not for the best and the brightest that have given their lives for our Country and our beloved Corps, you'd have no little college to hide-out in. If you dont know, this kind of discipline creates the US Army/ Navy/ USMC/ USCG the best concentration on battle than any other in the entire world, makes them prepared. Why do they do all these hand tricks with rifles and spin them? Because when someone throws them the rifle next time they will be able to get it from any direction and get it right into position to shoot because of this training! This takes Guts!

I am the mother of 2 U.S. Marines. Some of the posts that I have read make me sick. My sons have both served in Iraq at the same time. They have both seen the Silent Drill Team and Band. These people that down grade the Marines and what they do need to be sent out of the U.S. I am very proud of my sons and I support them 110 %. So those of you that think these teams are robots, can't understand the pride that comes with being a Marine. Oh ya, my youngest son gets out this summer and is already excepted to Penn State this fall. So you can have brains and be a Marine.

  • Disgusting

"He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, scince for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance, how violently I hate all this, how despiceable an ignoreable war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder." -- Albert Einstein

By gacad1 1139182706 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Einstein Huh!

For having such a "large brain" he had very little common sense and limited basic life skill's such as being able to keep himself clean or even feed himself. He may have been able to figure out the theory of relativity and thing's as such but as a person he was useless. If a war was to come he would hide in a corner and cry please don't hurt me, I will be your slave.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of thing's. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which think's that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made or kept so by the exertions and courage of better men than himself. John Stuart Mill.

    • War

War is disgusting and should only be a last resort. As for our armed forces, if any person that says they are a U.S. citizen (you may or may not be, I realize that) has a grudge against our soldiers simply because they are not in agreement with the concept of warfare simply needs to grow up. Albert Einstien is proof that an extremely intelligent mind can also be a rather small one at times. His quote never allows for the fact that war is sometimes necessary, and if it did, it would imply that soldiers should be forced to fight against their will rather than join of their own accord. At home soldiers may joyfully march in rank file but on the battlefield only the rare few find themselves in the midst of constant jeopardy and actually enjoy it. I come from a military oriented family; every one of my siblings has served in the armed forces at one time or another, yet being a pacifist I have never joined. Yet I still recognize that if every nation that claimed to be peace loving and a democratic society laid down their arms, only a matter of time would find every one of us under the rule of another Stalin or Castro or Hussien. Complain about war all you want, if you had your way you would find yourself complaining about slavery.

    • Cute Quote...

      Here's another...
He who would sacrifice liberty for security deserves neither. People like you are the sheep who make the warriors life worth living, for if you refuse to stand for what is right, if you are too cowardly to take hold of freedom and pull it from the grasp of those who would keep it from you, then you deserve to live under the rule of an iron fist. For myself, I would rather die free than live in servitude to a despot...
The first is one of our nations greatest leaders. I'd try to enlighten you, but from your previous post I see that attempting to instruct you would be as casting my pearls before swine. The second half is an original work. I'd ask you to cite it in any future writings, but asking so much from one who obviously knows so little would be an exercise in absolute futility...

    • Interesting...

...trust me 1American - the minute the second half of your quote becomes applicable to a certain situation i will happily quote it (I quite like it actually). However, as it stands, it's nothing but hot air. NEVER since the Cuban missile crisis have the American people been at risk of losing their "freedom" or national security. The last four years have been nothing but an episode of Seinfeld. It would be funny if it weren't so horrifyingly real.

You program robots. You train Marines. Yo can not learn Honor, Courage, and Commitment. These Marines ddidn't join the Corps to "twirl" rifles. This is just one of many responsibilities and one of many tours they will have in the Corps. Also, no amount of your tax dollars can be claimed for a man that is more courageous than you are who stands watch while you sleep comfortably at night. I suggest you apply for a passport, go to a foreign country and see if they greet you with open arms. And if they don't you will run to the nearest US Embassy that is guraded by United States Marines who know how to shoot the same rifles that they twirl.

i am not here to fight, i am not here to argue, i don't want to be rude but i think that in the honor of those who lost their life in the war (doesn't matter where), all troops deserves our honor. i served as a trooper on the Israely military for 3 long years, i used to fight, i used to shoot and i lost some of my best friends during the war in my erea.. so respect their memories and stop arguing about who's got the best troopers.. at the bottom line, none of us want to fight, we want to defand our country and always hoping for peace in the world. I do not believe in the war. This, right here...is what evolves to war. We as humans must rely on ourselves to be responsible, not color inspectors.

  • Are you all serious???

This is a Public Relations Unit.
Their mission is to garner public support from the people they represent and fight for. The discipline displayed here is the same discipline required in combat. The ability to do what is necessary at the exact moment required. I'd try to explain it to you, but unless you have been where these men have been, you can not understand. And I, for one, hope you never have to go there. I would like you to understand what it takes to do what they do, but I would not be willing to sacrifice your innocense in order for you to learn. The price these men pay is far greater than you will ever be capable of. Rather than berating or belittling their skills, why don't you just say "Thank You".

    • whoa!

Apparently, my attempt at making a joke fell short of it's target! I actually enjoyed the display, but I've been in Afghanistan myself and I've seen what war is about, so it disgusts me when folks try and glorify the military! I know better than most about waht teamwork, coordination and dicipline is about, this is just plain showing off.
Americans have an incessant need to compete in all and nothing, this puzzles me a bit.
I served with lots of americans and brits down there, also in Libanon, and we made jokes about this every chance we got!
While they're flailing their rifles around in grandeur and flash to impress an audience, others maintain peace and order like real soldiers.

of these young men signed up with the thought they would never see active duty? I can't help but think that simply because they have a little extra training in how to show off doesn't mean they aren't just as willing to fight for what they believe as the next grunt.

    • They're all soldiers

I believe you have an excellent point there, and of course, they are trained in the mundane arts of war as well!
I'd welcome any one of them by my side any time!
It's just the military humor that offends some people sometimes.
When you're in the army, you joke about the army, you joke about routine, and even the things that scare you profoundly to gain some measure of distance to the claustrofobic feeling you get sometimes.
I mean no disrespect to any soldier anywhere in the world, I've seen and done to much to be able to!
Americans are mostly a very kind sort in my experience, and the soldiers I've met on duty are warm and caring individuals whose only wish is to do their best! I respect that just as much as the next man!
One thing bothering me though, is that most of them are from really poor families, and sign up most out of need rather than wish!
This is really sad indeed, and shame on the American leaders for paying such a lousy salary to these soldiers!!
18.000$ a year for risking your life and working around the clock is not the way to show gratitude, so I'm glad you citizens pay proper homage to them!
Having your leaders pat your back is nice enough, but seeing or hearing civilians garnering support for you among their peers is plain fantastic!
And I think those who oppose these wars also understand that the rifleman can't be blamed for getting, relaying or executing orders he or she may not always approve of.

    • You know,

I've said it before, and I'll say it again here. It is so patently easy for those of us who are really in the military to pick out those who just wish they were. Maybe, boy, when you graduate high school, you too can join the military, but you'll probably end up with a career in fast food. You try to pass yourself off as a soldier, but what soldier have you met who would laugh about the skills of another? The answer? There isn't one. Warriors will show nothing but respect for other warriors. Even their enemies. You, little one, will never have what it takes to be one. Were I you, besides seriously contemplating suicide, I wuold keep my fingers off the keyboard until I knew what I was talking about. Perhaps you will find some videos on this site dealing woith the teletubbies. Tey are probably more to your speed...

    • Changes

Americans tend to drastically change their behaviour when they see the real world, a world where nothing is black and white!
We europeans have a different take on things, and we actually understand how acts of terror are roused into motion because we understand the consequences of playing "liberators" globally. Trust me, none in my platoon, or anybody elses had any misconception regarding the skills in combat of other soldiers!
We also had no misconception that these recent wars are meaningless and actually the works of men who see fit to extract riches from countries where dictators rule, expecting to be able to claim them for their own as a reward for killing bad men...
Well, guess what, Bin Laden is still alive, and Hussein never represented a threat to the US!
Of course, Bush invaded Iraq just to liberate the people, allthough this was'nt his primary obejctive initially!
This was said after it turned out there were no WMD there, so he had to find a "plausible" reason to have invaded.
As for my pont of view; as soon as you see combat up close, everything changes.
Neither I, or any of my fellow soldiers, regardless of nationality are robots who are programmed to assume what the Fox news channel say to you!
Some of us will be going to Libanon again this month, because of the ingenious idea some norwegian had of printing carricatures of the prophet Mohammed! There's lost of unrest that most affect us europeans, and I've lost a handful of friends in strife near the middle east and in arabic countries!
Furthermore, I would never shame soldiers by lying to anyone about these things!
I know a marine who's trained in similar drilling, and he said to me one night we were drinking; "I wish i could learn to shoot while I drill my rifle around, so it'd be like swashbuckling!"
Then we all laughed and started drilling around twigs and stuff, roaring in mock defiance to our comanders (who were also there)!
This is simply soldier humor, and even I have to put up with being immitated by some of the men!

    • Mummelmann,

I do not believe that Hitler ever presented a threat to the U.S. either, but I hear surprisingly few Europeans telling America that we should have stayed out of that war. Looking back though, I'm kind of wishing we had. I do speak German, and if Hitler had been allowed to continue, I could have actually travelled to every country on the European continent and been able to converse with the now German population...

    • America and Europe

Without america, europe would still have turned back Hitler in the second world war. I would say that russia had more to play in that role than the americans. I think that 1America has been watching to many historically innacurate hollywood movies such as saving private ryan or U571. Go buy a history book. As to the comment about allowing Hitler to overrun europe, well you showed your true colours there and the ultimate disrespect to your vets. In future your comments will be taken less seriously

    • Slightly different

Fisrstly, the US did'nt involve themselves before their economic interests were at risk, at least not on the european continent.
And second, Hitler was vastly more dangerous to us than Saddam could ever be!
Hitler made 7 countries capitulate in less than 6 months, and took only 2 years to conquer and hold more land than Djenghis Khan ever had!
The german warmachine must be the most effective in history i think, and even though Hitler was stark raving mad, I really admire german tacticians for having the nerve (and skill) to accomplish such feats.
I don't disagree with removing Saddam, he's deserving of everything he's getting now, but the US should have stayed back until they could muster some more troops from a european coalition!
I'm glad he's gone, but i openly laughed when i heard an arrogant Rumsfeld stating they would invade and control Iraq in five days...
      That's grosely underestimating your enemy!
These wars are really dividing, and personally I can't be pulled in either direction! I've seen it up close AND heard other people's reactions, I really don't know what's right in all this.
But the next time (and there will be one), I hope the US will listen to well meant advice and don't go charging in solo without knowing what they're getting into!
A more balanced president and advisors (they're rather screwed up some of them...) would serve the american people well I think!
One that's neither to the right nor left in politics (if such a man exists :-) )!
