The 5,200 tonne attack submarine HMS Trenchant used one of her torpedo tubes to launch the advanced new long-range missile, which then flew over the Gulf of Mexico, striking a target hundreds of miles away with pin-point accuracy.

During the 60 minute test flight the missile reached heights of 10,000 feet (3 km) and speeds of 500 miles an hour (805 kmh).

  • Tomahawk Block IV missile

FYI: This is the latest evolution of the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile developed by Raytheon for the US and British Navy. The Block IV missile has many enhanced capabilities as opposed to the old Block III (of which there is plenty of footage from US strikes against Iraq if you like explosions). These missiles are truly a credit to engineering and provide a unique capability to our naval forces.

Smaller FYI: US Navy has recently completed the first in their SSGN class submarines which are capable of carrying 154 of these missiles in a vertical launch configuration. Talk about firepower.
