Marmots are generally large ground squirrels. Those most often referred to as marmots tend to live in mountainous areas, (marmots Himalayana) are spread across rocky barrens of Ladakh, Tibet, Nepal, and even Mongolia.
Ladakh is very lyrical .more than the rarified atmosphere ,it is the amazing mountains that take your breath away. But in crevasses of giant rocky outcrops lie the most beautiful surprises. The barren mountainsides hold little lives which are known as Marmots. Also known as the Tibetan snow pig, these creatures burrow their way under the rocks and feed mostly on berries and small vegetation.
Tso-Moriri, the 15-by-5 mile lake, is a good place to spot marmot. Travelers also tell tales of spotting marmots about 15 miles from Pangong Tso, on the way back to Leh. Locals say this is the spot to catch some friendly marmots in action –only because they know that passing travelers will feed them goodies. Marmots are difficult to spot during winter as they tend to hibernate.
