  • It isn't

so much that a dog has tendencies to be mean or not. Dogs have instinct and have certain triggers that will make them act certain ways. Sometimes they might nip as a warning to back off or different situations where they feel uncomfortable. The dog may not even mean to hurt, but does not realize how fragile the baby is. I had the nicest dog I've ever met when I was around 5. She was an english setter and slept on my bed every night. She was very well trained but one day I did something that triggered her to snap at me. Never an instances of aggression before or after that, but it's still a chance it could happen, especially with babies knowing no better.

  • Mental!

Looking at the stats of pitbulls, cant believe you would let it anywhere near a kid of that age!

these types of dogs are banned in the UK !

    • It all depends

upon how you raise the dog. My pit has been raised in a loving and caring home where he is treated like one of the family and is respected like any other member. He has been around children since he was 3 weeks old and has never bitten anyone, not even house guests. He is one of the friendliest, most playful and most loyal dogs I've ever owned.

ANY dog can be vicious if you mistreat it or train it to be that way. The "stats" that you refer to are more likely the reputation these dogs have been tagged with because of the negative publicity from the media.

  • If you knew anything about dogs...

    • Actually

I know quite a bit about dogs, especially mine, which is why I'm completely comfortable with him near my children. And if he could change diapers, prepare meals and use the phone for emergencies, I'd let him babysit them.

  • Really?

Gentle with the kids??? Not until you see the kids nice little head between those teeth and the jaw clamps down hard enough on that cute little skull will you take back your words. I have seen these dogs maul anything once they decide to turn,

also seen a german shepard maul a little kid. i have also seen a laborador maul a little kid. dont just think pit bulls r the only dog doing this.

    • Interesting comment

So you're saying my Pit Bull will just wake up one day and "decide" that 'hmmm... I think I'll attack my owners today - the ones who love me, feed me, and give me a good home and keep me safe'." Not likely to happen. I've seen Pomeranians more vicious than my Pit Bull.

But instead of me defending my dog, take a look at this link to a great presentation someone posted on another video here on Metacafe

Don't generalize about the breed by what the media tells you.

    • I agree

I'd be more afraid of little insecure dogs like my Jack Russell Terrier that ripped my face open while I was playing with him. I had a boxer with huge potential for violence as she was adopted, that never once bit anybody -- not even a dog that attacked her. Don't write a dog off as violent just because of it's breed.

    • totally agree

saw the video, couldn't agree anymore that it's us who force the pit buill terriers to insanity. I have personally owned several breeds of dogs, ranging from german spitzs, alsatians, and the beautiful golden retriever, and even a dobermann. If you notice closely in UK, all the reported pit bull owners were abusive to their dogs, had no clue about how to treat a pet and hence turned a perfectly gentle dog to raving madness. A dog, any dog for that matter is extremely loyal and devoted toward's it's owner. But if the same owner from which the dog expected kindness, love and protection, ill-treated them, they tend to lose faith. hence their erratic behaviour
