  • infants or neonates(from birth-28 days)

normally,, neonates or infants has a reflex which assumes swimming position or move,,
in addition,, their airway closes underwater..just like when they're still at their intrauterine life..
to sum it all,, it's just normal....only for those neonates( from birth til 28 days of life)..
you need not to worry of drowning... but,, neonates can hold their breaths only for a few minutes.. and their airway opens thus neonate has increase risk for aspiration

  • uh...

To be honest, this is kinda pointless at this age. Babies have a natrual instinct to hold their breath underwater, so this whole thing about teaching them when to breath is really useless until they hit toddler age. As for floating, I guess it's a good bonding excersie for the parents and the kid :\

  • Learn Early

My son, now 35, could swim before he could walk.. actually before he could crawl. He was drownproofed by my wife and I , real early. When let go, they will swim like a frog underwater and also know to hold their breath. However, at this stage, you must remain close to him/her.
He taught my grandkids the same thing. At least we don't have to worry abuot them drowning.

    • Learn very early

My grandson was swimming at 2 weeks of age.I taught him under water first then by the age of two he was able to swim above water. Many people had heart failer when he would dive in the deep end.He is still a perfect awimmer.

    • Young is better

      Judy,

My son is now 36 and he cannot remember NOT being able to swim. He taught both of his girls to swim early also.
We use to get a kick out of him jumping in the deep end of the pool and people starting to get up and rescue him, then he would bob up and swim the length of the pool... I don't know how many people trained their kids early also.... just because of what we did with our son... There is no telling how many lives that saved... I've often wondered.

    • I wished I had learned early......

I didn't know how to swim until I was 17 and it was just awful watching everyone else diving and swimming in the pool having a blast.I made sure both my girls and grandkids learned how as soon as possible. They will in turn teach their children and so on.So we know that those lives will be saved by learning how not only to swim but to float if you are to tired to swim.

  • hhhmmmm

i think no body attend their science subject when they are studying....its called boyance theory...its not all about the muscle or fat its how u feel at ease floating in the water.....thats why people u have to learn more about science ok?!!!!

    • hhhmmmmm ,,WHAT ????????

      Son,
you are the one that needs to study science.. It is precisely muscle and fat.... in order to float, one must be lighter than water... If one has more fat, fat floats, then you will float. The more muscular one is, the less fat is on the body and if you displace more water than you weigh, you will sink........
A boat floats because it weighs less than the ater it dislpaces.. That is why it has sides.
Go back to school.. that is simple science and you didn't know it.
