    drifting is always slower. it has a faster entrance into the corner but a slower exit. The added friction just slows it down. The only time drifting would be slightly faster is when the corner is a tight, tight hairpin where drifting is desirable.

    Yeah it's true drifting shaves off speed, but you have to reduce speed anyway when you're taking a corner, especially a sharp one, unless you wanna bash your car in. Some types of drifting are for show, but there are other types, like I think inertia drifting, that give you better acceleration when leaving the turn when your rear wheels regain full traction.

    Anyways, drifting is useful in racing, but not all the time. When drifting is in its element (i.e. drift races) it's not just about speed, but other things like drift angle, how closely you follow the predetermined line set by the judges, how much rubber you burn and basically how good a show you put up. Go watch Formula D, excellent drifting show with racers and cars from all over (yes, Americans too)

    u know how i know? cause i used to d1 drift with my corola gts coupe and id like to see u even try and do anyof this with out wrecking. ur prolly like "nascar takes more skill" well it dosnt actually . all u do is drive around a track with only left turns. and who the fuck cares if drifting isnt a speedy sport that would win any other kind of racing. drifting is an art in witch the driver can be one with his vehicle... sideways :D

      I totally agree!! Corolla huh? Im doing it right now with my S14 Kouki. It takes tons of skill and concentration. Definetly not as easy as I thought it would be.

      drifting is sweet. I do it for fun, and its a great rush, but I'll tell ya what else I do... I'm a stock car racer as well and let me tell you drifting is a joke compared to the amount of skill you need to compete at the level of NASCAR and I'm speaking from experience. Anyone who think they're the baddest dude on earth because they drift is a fool. Auto racing is far more competative and far more challenging.

    in a race, the guy in more control will drift less, and go faster. these guys are just burning rubber out if stupidity and inadequacy.
    Just like a biker doing a wheely. less grip, less conrtol, impresses morons but doesn't win races.

      you can express your feeelinggs and emotionss when revvving n accelerating, vrooomm twist around them corners, sum do it smoothly sum with full anger, best way to do it is by feelin it n calculating(feelin) distance speed for a drift, again again again controlling your feel and expressing your acceleration at every different drift, rolf n keep pushin n steppin on it to the limit! i say its like singing >.<

      You honestly think they do this to go fast? Yeah ......... well done .......... moron. Its a sign of control and its an art.

      I'd love to be in a convoy of drifters at an area such as that but theres not too many of either around here. Some of the RPS13's and the CS14's there are gorgeous. No real skill there just a bunch of guys having a bunch of fun. Good on 'em.

      But I think it does depend on the type of drifting as well as the corner. Most drifting you see on clips like these are for show and crowd response. But there are alot of other techniques in drifting which when used properly can help you gain precious seconds in a race.
      This brings me to my point about the corner. It depends on the degree of the corner. Obviously if its a very slight corner and you drift around it well then yes, maybe u lose a little, cus of the traction and slide. But if its a very sharp corner, like close to a hairpin etc. then a normal car will have to brake alot going in to it then accelerate out. But a well executed drift will slide u around that corner totally, thus gainin you some precious time. In the end it still comes back down to how good the driver is and what the car can do.
