Julio de 2007 -- Según un reciente censo, en Estados Unidos más de cuatro millones y medio de niños son criados por sus abuelos, y un 20 por ciento de estas familias viven en la pobreza. Una nueva alternativa de vivienda pública está ayudando a los abuelos a ofrecerles a estos niños un hogar seguro. Los “Apartamentos para Abuelos” en Nueva York, es el primer edificio público construido exclusivamente para abuelos que crían a sus nietos. 51 familias, de las cuales la mitad son hispanas ya están disfrutando de estos beneficios y criando a casi una centena de niños. Afortunadamente este tipo de iniciativa sé están multiplicando en algunos estados del país. El centro de información para abuelos de la “AARP Foundation” trabaja conjuntamente con agencias y organizaciones locales y estatales para ayudar a conectar a los abuelos con los recursos y beneficios disponibles.
