What a crash.
The helicopter was hovering at 1,000 to 1,200 feet, during an electronic news gathering flight, when it experienced a loss of hydraulic system power. The pilot stated he did not have any specific recollection regarding the beginning of the accident sequence. He said that he felt the helicopter was not responding to his control inputs, "the way it should be."
Examination of the helicopter's hydraulic system revealed that the hydraulic pump drive belt had been installed inside-out and failed due to an overload, leading to a full hydraulic system failure. According to Eurocopter's emergency procedures for the helicopter, the pilot action following a hydraulic system failure would be to "calmly reduce collective pitch and adjust the airspeed to between 40 and 60 knots in level flight" and then cut off the hydraulic pressure, by moving the toggle switch located on the collective pitch lever to off. The procedures further state that when the accumulators are exhausted, the control forces become significantly higher, but "not unmanageable." The helicopter could be controlled without the main and tail rotor servo actuators being hydraulically powered, but this would require the pilot to apply "non-negligible" forces that are substantially different than the forces required with the hydraulic system operating properly.
The National Transportation Safety Board determined the probable cause(s) of this accident as "The pilot's failure to maintain control of the helicopter after a loss of hydraulic system pressure due to a failure of the hydraulic pump belt. Factors in this accident were the pilot's mis identification of a hydraulic failure, the pilot's subsequent failure to perform the appropriate emergency procedure, and the improper installation of the hydraulic pump belt by maintenance personnel."
That pilot did an AMAZING job getting the helicopter down. The NTSB always lists "failure to maintain control" as a factor in an accident simply because that's an easy one. Rotor fell off? You failed to maintain control! Flying Helicopters is harder than you can imagine when everything is working. When things are broken they crash and usually, you die. The "significantly higher but not unmanageable" is from the Pilots handbook for that aircraft and is placed there to keep the manufacturer from getting sued. The procedure documented above has been demonstrated by highly skilled test pilots with thousands of hours of flight time. A pilot in a helicopter has literally 3 seconds to determine that something is wrong and take corrective action before things spiral completely out of control... This pilot did a great job. ANY helicopter crashthat you live through was a very good one.
By Jingo232 1149801688It is not very hard to drive a helicopter but yes u people who are not superman needs to take flying lessons..
If u look on the post over this u can see what was wrong and that there should be no problem flying away..
inexperienced pilot if u ask me.
For you people who think i talk bullshit myself?
Well i can more about helicopters than 99.9% percent of you. I have been flying Radio Controlled Choppers since i was 10years old.
And yes i built it my self from a kit and i had to buy all electronics and engine besides it was not a ready to fly pack.
And yes i can fly RC choppers for u who wondered.
And that guy should have managed to save the chopper as well it was only luck that they did not die really good luck..
And for u people who says that he did an amazing save that is bullshit what else could he do? it was not a save at all.. They do NOT fly with parachutes.. they have NO ejection seats. and a chopper like that costs around 800 000$ to 1.6million$.
aka 99% luck 1% skill.
You have been playing with toys since you were a child.. and therefore you have enough expertise to tell the real pilots what the scope is? That is about the funniest example of what happens when one lies to ones self and believes his own lies.. Dude I have 30 years experience with real helicopters including a year in combat at places like Hamburger Hill. I have over 12,000 hours flight time.. accident free. One reason I am accident free is I knew the difference between my aircraft and a toy. Another reason is I avoided like the plague little boys with toys that happened to look like aircraft. I avoided being in their presence as well as their advice or words of wisdom.. those little boys with toys, are absolute proof that ignorance is always arrogant and as such are utterly incapable of seeing themselves for the fools they are.. One question ck90. What ever gave you the idea that anyone cared or wondered if you played with toys or not?
By Fourniner 1196847474But being the person i am, i would probably panic and crash it too lol
By ElTIco 1148833831in gta eh ell u keep that up and tell us,more about ur near death expearyance
By icey d 1143835776What a crash, eh? That pilot's got some skill... even if they did land in a heaping pile of rubble on the street. :P
By Xegrot 1152490145god were dont care about da hydarlic system and how high he was 4 god sake man were not all dat fukin cleva prick
By proud2bebritish 1155471956You never know whats gonna fall from the sky, next thing u know, it could be a boat.
By Piston Head 1147335448first i thought it was a fake...
amazing that they all survived.
because it's a Duplicate I've seen just a week ago
By dancetothemusic 1140142674"News Helicopter Crashes" was what you saw, but only submitted 9 months ago. This is the original submission, that was the duplicate. Just an observation.
By madhatter 1142901687Why is it that a ride with tourits on board is forbidden over houses ??
Thats why.
they couldall be dead now if it wasn't for the skill of the pilot and their Guardian Angles.
By catchadream 1111447810This is what I call: work related stress..
Glad they survived the crash!
Lucky guys? If they were really lucky, it would not had happened 2 them at all.
we have to give 5 stars to the pilot of that heli...i think its his experience who saved all those guys
By adagio4strings 1143588810U mean the skill that almost killed 2 persons lives his own? what did he do well? hmm i know.
NOTHING.
Plz if u dont have any knowledge about choppers then keep it to ur self.
The choppers where in good condition to fly away and land.
DId u know that good heli pilots can land the choppers even without engines?
Its called autorotation and that is skill not that bozo flying around like an alcoholic PURE LUCK.
