Fox news recently reported that the FBI has found a way to monitor your conversations through your cell phone even if it is turned off and your not using it.
Maybe there is something not being said correctly here, but as this is presented, it is impossible. GPS units do not send data to the satellites; they only receive. Any signal potentially sent from a GPS/cell phone would be sent via the cell network, not the GPS satellite. And turning the phone off -- doesn't that disconnect from the cell network entirely? Only the clock is working then. Maybe the story should be that the cell phone can have its microphone activated even after you hang up the phone -- not when you turn it off.
By gregconquest 1184660060It turns out that this may be true. Do a search for "roving bug" for more information. This is not related in any way to GPS, though. I was trying to reply to "rafflorida" in my original post. Sorry for the bad threading.

was built to send and receive cordinates for the purpose of location help. Well, it was discovered, as hard as it sounds, that with a little bit of switching, the microphone COULD be turned on and listened to through the GPS satilites. Those sats had already been designed for voice comm as well as data trans. It's for real; but I didn't know big brother was going this route!
