Rocket Launcher Found in Teen's Car

So, an underage driver gets pulled over in Novato, California. It was supposed to be a routine traffic stop, but as Sacramento’s KCRA reports police quickly discovered it wasn’t so routine.

“They found a rocket propelled grenade launcher in the backseat. They arrested the 15-year-old and took the weapon.”

Yikes. What’s a 15-year-old doing with that? San Francisco’s KPIX has a guess.

“It's the kind of weapon used in the war in Iraq.”
POLICE: “We're in contact with the military at this point in time to see who should have the serialized device on the weapon.”
“Classmates say the boy has a brother in the army they also say the boy is repeating a grade at San Marin high school because he was in trouble with the law before.”

So was the boy ever a threat to the community. KTVU writes...

“Not taking any chances, police shut down the busy thoroughfare and evacuated nearby businesses including the main library … A UC Berkeley bomb squad robot was put into action. Police said the RPG was fully functional, but the grenade itself wasn’t found.”

Dealing with military devices seems isn’t new for the UC Berkley Bomb Squad. The Daily Californian writes...

“In April, the team detonated two World War I grenades found in a San Rafael home.”

Because he’s a minor, the suspect’s name has not yet been released.
