Pepper spray is the resin of cayenne pepper (oleoresin capsicum) hence OC spray. Chemical Mace is a tear gas based product (CS). The effects are almost the same but mace, due to the properties of the product, tend to not only affect the target but the user and bystanders. OC has been accepted as superior. You probably won’t find a PD in this country using Chemical Mace.

The idea is to get sprayed and be able to ward off an attacker.
It is a pre-requisite to carry it and gain respect for the tool.

If an officer is sprayed the use of deadly force is justified. It teaches you how to function if you are attacked with it.

some people are allergic to pepper spray so mace is safer.

I've experienced it too while I was in training. I'm glad I did, because I few weeks ago I was crossed "pepper sprayed" by a co-worker who sprayed a criminal we were fighting with. I was able to keep going because I knew how to deal with it.

Two types of sprays are mist and stream. The stream can bounce off someone and spray you. Think like a squirt gun. The spray doesnt bounce (the video shows a spray type) but it can be less effective in wind.

It is standard police training. I had to go through something similar. One purpose is to prepare you if you are sprayed (accidentally or on purpose). Another is to give police confidence in the power of the pepper spray so that they do not automatically resort to the gun.

Everyone wants police to use "less than lethal force." To do so you must train for it.
