The reason why people are not defending the soldiers for their actions is because these countries which occupied Iraq are supposed to be above such actions. Who are any of us to screw with the way another country runs itself if we ourselves are prone to take actions which are considered brutal? Firstly, I seem to remember that Desert Shield, Storm etc. actually lasted a bit longer than 100 hours and involved forces from maybe 20 countries. You'll be on your own against Iran (except for maybe Israel)

Secondly, Iran wasn't just fighting Iraq, it was fighting the majority of the Gulf which supplied Saddam with money, munitions and armaments. (A friend of mine remembers when the road into iraq from Kuwait was closed to the public from 2200 to 0600 for vast munitions shipments). Also the US provided the pre-cursors to chemical weapons which were used against the Iranians as Iran was WINNING. Therefore its obvious that the US feared Iran more than Iraq. (Interestingly the invasion of Kuwait was largely brought about because kuwait was demanding its money back from Iraq and Saddam was pissed off cos he felt he should keep it as Iraq had been bleeding and the Gulf states had sat back paying.)

The reason that Iran was able to prevail was that there was a huge belief in the country and its religious leadership-to such an extent that children were sometimes sent ahead of the attacking infantry to clear paths through minefields. (Only sometimes mind, they're fanatical not stupid).

The key difference between Iran and Iraq is the willingness of the Iranians to die for their country whereas there was never much desire on the Iraqi side to die for Saddams brutal regime. The small scale resistance in Iraq (although growing steadily stronger) will be insignificant compared to the resistance in Iran. I'll be on Ops in Iraq next year and the thought of 10,000s of Iranians sitting acroos the border does frighten me and frightens those US soldiers I've spoken to.

Two final reasons the US will never invade and will think twice about attacking Iran-(a)they actually do have WMDs, (b) they could stop all oil shipments from Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi and some from the UAE by blocking the Strait of Hormuz. ie stopping about 40% of world crude shipments

I am a professional soldier, asusal we only get a part of this story, we dont know what the orders were given to lead these soldiers to this event. For what I can see is that the soldiers involved have singled out the ring leaders and have taught them a lesson to curve the voilet protest, as next week they will be back with AK47s, as their confidence has grown, so maybe this measure could be a positive for them in the environment they are in or could backfire, only time will tell. But the main thing is, to be a soldier you swear an oath within yourself to fight enemies foriegn or homegrown to protect the weak or helpless, to be a soldier and given a role of crowd control with the chance of been killed, I would say this would irrate you to no end and to cease an opportunity to possibly stop or prevent further demostrations, sometimes this measure has to be taken, but there is a limit to everything. We have to understand one thing, WAR is not a pretty thing and Media has no place in it.

First of all the "two tanks abreast" dream scenario is not only tactically suicide, it wouldn't work on 98% of fallujah's streets because they're too narrow. As for the AC-130 yes we used them. Mainly because of their pinpoint accuracy. And if you can provide me with one shred of evidence that the US used napalm in fallujah, I'll vote democrat on the next election. OK, I was't there but I have talked to people who were and that's what they said. As a tank commander I don't see why its "tatically suicide"-an RPG won't penetrate the armour (yes from the spelling I am British, not American). I agree with the 98% comment but I did say it was only the main streets. Don't know about the accuracy of the AC-130 so maybe give you that one-but I'm not sure how accurate the 105mm can be. Either way, a better example is the use of MLRS in the city-hardly pinpoint accuracy.

About the use of Napalm, try reading the account of Col James Aller, Commander Marine Air Group 11. Or try reading Pentagon reports about the matter. They don't call it napalm as it uses kerosene rather than petrol, but its still napalm in all but name. Incidentally the US is one of the few countries not to sign up to a 1980 UN convention banning the use of napalm against civilian targets.

After doing some research I have still failed to find evidence of the marines or soldiers using napalm in fallujah. I do find it being used against MILITARY targets during the initial push into baghdad in 2003. Notably on a hill just north of the kuwaiti border, and at bridge crossings south of baghdad. None during the assault in fallujah. There are also unsubstantiated claims of the US using 'poison gas' during the attack. Well, most of the 'facts' come from people in the city who describe (according to what I have read of their descriptions) such things as white phospherous and possibly even a fuel air explosive. And then claim it was napalm. Why? either they simply don't know what napalm looks like and does, or they are trying to deceive. (one went so far as to claim napalm only burns exposed skin but leaves the clothing untouched.) Several of the marines I work with were involved in fallujah. They admit white phospherous was used, (a nasty weapon in itself) and all categorically deny any use of napalm. (actually the M77 'fire bomb'. essentially napalm) There was an 'islam online' story claiming poison gas, unsubstantiated, as well as citing the use of napalm in 2003. many mistook this to mean that napalm was used in fallujah as well. The islam online story does not state this. There are multiple 'eyewitness' accounts of very dubious origin that claim the US rounded up women and children in mass numbers and machine gunned them down, or rolled their tanks over the innocent civilians. or that we destroyed the hospital right off so there would be no accurate count of casualties. Typicall propaganda. Contrary to what people want to believe, anything like that occuring in the US military, would bring a shitstorm of news coverage and investigations. (Haditha ring a bell?) To date, there is nothing verifiable from either Iraqi or US sources to establish such a claim in fallujah. I'm no apologist. Were such things to be true, I'd be the first in line demanding an investigation, and yes, even voting democrat. Which thankfully is still not the case.
Also, still trying to find accounts of MLRS use in fallujah. It's an area weapon. Highly ineffective in city fighting unless you simply want to level the whole city. I won't rule it out or rule it in till I find out one way or another.

tactical suicide by the tanks means you've taken two tanks and made them targets to a massive IED instead of just one. RPG's won't penetrate their armor. That's not the worry. But a common, and effective, enemy tactic is to disable the big tanks with large IED's (blow the tread off) then pick at them with RPG's or bigger. Even and RPG gunner can get lucky. Knock out one tank, you can go around, knock out two, you've blocked your road. Not that the two abreast didn't happen, just that I've yet to find anyone who has seen/heard of it. If you know of any, I'd be glad to talk with them.

Western media, has made strong points about the benefits of the invasion (i.e. geting rid of a dictator) and downplayed all the bad points.
