I went and bought an album called Octavarium (wrong one), thank God they let me exchange it cause it was AWEFUL. It was like the singer from Stryper and type0negative got together to make some meaninless drivel compilation of absolute S**t The album Train of Thought is like a different band altogether. Though still not great. Many of the songs have at least a few minutes of great music each, but unfortunately have also a few minutes each of drivel as well. The headline song (from the clip start) is called "As I Am" and starts out bad with lots of singing to words similar to what they would do impromptu on "Whose line Is it Anyway". No melody, and great guitar and drum solo's going off in all different directions. Having said that...It all comes together for one of the best chorus' segments I've ever heard. It seems each song had some brilliance and crap mixed in. Not one song put it all together. A feat that apparantly only Metallica and a few others have been able to do. I would compare Dream Theater to Megadeth in this regard.
Anyone agree with me?

Try Liquid Tension Experiment, Mike Portnoy (Drum) , John Petrucci (Guitar), and Jordan Rudes (keyboard) stay but instead of the amazing John Myung (Bass) they take the also incredible Tony Levin and (thanks god) no singer.
I like it even better than Dream Theater, may be you do too...
By the way in the net there is a video of them called "Dream Theater Medley" that is 12 minutes of just crazy, crazy stuff, i love it! Check if you can find it too.

DON'T you dare compare Dream Theater to Megadeth, Dream Theater = progressive, Megadeth = trash ><. If you dont like progressive music, dont review it. Mike Portnoy is the best progressive drummer out there, Petrucci on of the best guitarist out there... all these guys are very talented. Also those guys who say that Mike is being excesive because he has so many cymbals.. would you blame a pianist because he has so many keys but only uses few of them? Just cause he doesnt use ALL in ONE moment doesnt mean he does not use them at all. Again if you dont know S**t about drumming or a particular drummer YOU should not review those kind of things.

Some pianists do use all keys. Plus, your example is pretty dumb. It's like saying a bass guitar should only have 3 strings, rather than 4. But watever. I don't think he has too many cymbals, I just think your example is pretty bad.

i play the drums. i have one cymbal in my set. i make do. i disagree with you because when i use different techniques i can get like half a dozen sounds out of it. i don't think i'd ever need more than 4, tops. a ride cymbal, a china cymbal, and a crash and a light splash. that's like 20 different sounds if you know how to use them. so yes i think this guys (like many drummers, mainly the metal band kind) go way too far with their sets.

Actually, I withdraw my last statement saying he doesn't have too many cymbals. Now I say he does. And a piano player cant make different sounds with each key.

Mike Portnoy, inducted into the Drummers Hall of Fame this year, is so far advanced it is mind boggling. See him live just once and you will walk away shaking your head. Best drummer, best showman, and turning into a damn good back up singer. He has won best rock, progressive and overall drummer 8 years in a row before he was inducted into the H of F. Also wins best instructional DVD for the last 2 years. 2 words describe him: F**kING AWESOME!!!!!

this guy doesn't even use half the cymbals he has....i have a hihat, crash, splash, and ride and i get by perfect....but then again, i play punk and ska, so not much cymbals are needed

but this is a really small clip for them. most of their songs are ten to 15 minutes long. if you buy the dvd "liquid drum theater" then you can see him using everything.

I've seen them live and he uses everything!!! He is the craziest drummer i've ever seen followed close by Simon Phillips

I play the drums for 10 years now, i have 7 cymbals . Using different techniques? Besides accenting the cymbal with bass or a snare OR hitting the bell, you can only change the volume of a particular cymbal. You can also grab the cymbal so it doesnt resonate later. But thats not A DIFFERENT SOUND. Have you seen Terry Bozzio's set? He has like 50 tomes all sorted out chromaticly

The band members have individual talent but are mostly creating pure S**t This segment (the clip) is the pinnacle of what they can do. Unfortunately the songs are an average of 10 minutes each in length and have only about 1 minute of this kind of sound within them. The rest of the songs are unsynchronized crap. JUST LIKE MEGADETH! Some great guitar and sometimes some melody...but mostly S**t You know when you have to fast forward in a song over 6 minutes to get to a good part, they pretty much S**k I was exited to get this album after seeing this clip, but was grossly dissappointed with the rest of their crap. It's no different than a phenominal guitarist who plays fast as hell, but the notes make no sense. E.V.H however takes speed and melody to create actual music. I'm sorry Bajanek if you are hung on this band as one of your favorites. Maybe you feel better about yourself protecting this obscure talentless (as a group) band that frankly not many people have ever heard of. By the way, by progressive do you mean repetative, non-melodic, non-in sync, garbage?...Oh, I see your point then.

I love Dream Theater and always have since I first heard them. For the guy who liked Petrucci's playing, I suggest you buy Suspended Animation, it's his solo album and I think you'd like it

No doubt are these guys spectacular musicians. When I was young and not so mature, I believed they WERE the best musicians on the planet. But as time goes on, and you improve, you learn that music isn't about complex compositions or insane measures of oddtime.. No music is about the listener. Now I like to sit back and listen first.. unlike Dream Theater in which the first time I heard it I had to think my way through what I just heard.. that should come later. Think about it..

Why are you so agressive? Their music is not S**t and you know it. Years ago i thought J.S.Bach, Duke Ellington, and Spultura were crap and people just pretended to like it to be cool. With the time you listen to it and learn to enjoy it. I love good music, not matter if is classic, jazz, rock, house (yes there is even good talented house) etc. They are amazing musicians, they work really hard and areconsidered between the best of the world, their music is really complicated and not for every one and i rather heard them live than in cd.

are you deaf? i have every single one of their songs available to me and absolutely none of it is "unsynchronized" and most definitely not "s**t" most, if not all the members of this band are some of the most credited musicians from some of the best music schools around. jordan rudess was in a music college (i forget which one) at age nine! and portnoy went to berkley i believe. you seriously need to take another listen to those CDs and get your friggin ears checked. this is the best band out there, and i doubt anybody will ever top their talent.

If any of you out their are under the impression that Joey is really that good then you ovbviously dont have much idea what you're talking about. All death metal and metal drummers can play fast double bass etc and travis brker isnt anything but average. Kai Hahto from wintersun could beat the crap out of those two in drumming any day. he can play fast double bass and also with style and groove because hes in two death metal bands and one jazz quartet he uses what he knows from both genres two create some incredible beats which people like jordison couldnt play for crap. of course talent is involved but its really also about innovation. alot of people play very fast but the stuff they play is boring. Kai hahto's drums in wintersun - i can't say even one song has boring drum parts or even typical drums parts( apart from maybe ' sleeping stars'). Its all about creating something over all thats intersting, mind blowing and not typical boring crap.

Well I'm in like... 3 metal bands, 6 jazz quartets, a barber shop quartet, and a polka/ techno trio. That must mean I'm better. How about we give them all props for being talented. Portnoy is the best I've ever seen. You're not a drummer, are you? Every drummer knows that the fastest way S**k is to compare yourself to other drummers. I'm not the best but, there is no other drummer that plays like me. So shut up.

I also love L.T.Experiment better because they got rid of the canandian (the singer) who is very talented and his voice has amazing power but it gets on my nerves!

you can buy the dvd "liquid drum theater" and you can see him playing, you can change camera angles and all kinds of things. he explains how the band uses different time signatures and its also helpful for anybody taking a music course in school.

Having played the piano AND the drums I can tell you this......A piano has 88 keys, 7 notes(in different octives and sharpes or flats), and most decent pianist will use around 50 of those keys during any one non-simplistic "song." While drumming uses more syncrynicity between left hand, right hand, left foot, right foot, the necessity of more than a half dozen cymbals is totally useless. If you know what you're doing, you can create all the sounds of a cymbal you need with much less than Mr. Portnoy. It just seems that a lot of it is more for "show" than actual use.

You just proved you dont know S**t about drumming, thank you. Btw, if you would actually watch some of Portnoy's clinics or DVD"s OR SOMETHING, you would know why he uses so much cymbals, he explains everything there. Some of the reasons cutrush explained.

P.S. You didnt get the part about the pianist in my post .

Besides the fact that all the cymbals sound different, there is possitioning to consider. If your doing a fast roll for example from left to right on the toms, you may need the crash or splash right there. Swinging your whole arm around then back again will take too long. So if you can afford the kit you need, to play what you want how you want, go for it. Sounds to me like someone is jealous!

Your comparison is inane. The keys of a keyboard are used to create only one sound no matter how many there are. A drum kit, on the other hand, is divided up by function. Repetition of function equals useless redundancy. The amount of repetition of pieces in that kit just means that it consists of a lot of redundant junk.

I wrote my thesis on the percussive element in music, so don't try insulting my intelligence by claiming that I don't know what I'm talking about.
