- RECIPE
Skin and clean gar (or carp). Marinate in bar-b-que and A-1 sauce with one slice of lemon. While marinating, dig 3 foot hole. Place wood (or charcoal) into hole. Cover with good sized rocks. Light wood or charcoal and heat rocks to steaming.

Place appropriate length of wood inside fish and wrap in aluminum foil. Place fish inside pit and cover with dirt. Cook for 30-45 minutes. Dig up fish, unwrap foil, take wood out, throw gar (or carp) away...eat wood.
Serves 3-6381615- ..... eat the wood

these guys are actually BOW fishing. Thats when theres a fishing reel and line attached to a bow and arrow and u shoot the fish with a Large arrow with fishing line tied to it and reel it in. It supposedly combines the best of hunting and fishing. But as an avid fisherman I dont really agree it takes a lot of the sport out of it I think.

They truly are 'trash fish' they can devastate game fish populations, and for this reason they are never out of season and there is never a limit on the number of gars that can be harvested from area lakes (at least in Texas that holds true).
For those who are bad mouthing these bow-fishers, I just wanted to let you know, that they are actually doing a service for the local fish population by removing this creature from the environment. It may sound harsh, but there are no predators for gar, but man, and larger gar. And quite frankly, most men wont eat a gar ;-)
I was there when this video was shot, its just a prank. And the fish used was a dead one, plus this video was shot successfully only in the 3rd attempt. Ha ha!

To tell yall the truth i don't think this is an alligator gar. Alligator gars have much wider snouts and are much darker in coloration, and much larger. The mississippi state record is 8' 10'' and 215lbs. Its posted at the MDWFP website. Another point is that they are farily rare and many other gar are confused with them. The National Fish Hatchery in tupelo mississippi raises them to reintroduce them to the Mississippi River and i have actually seen them there when i was working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a Biological Science Technician. They are very distinct. They are very important fish to have becasue they are the only fish that are large enough to control the population of other gar. They are also not that hard to catch the hard part is finding them. They fight in sputs and tire out quickly.

While I, myself, do not bowfish, I can appreciate the skill it takes to do it successfully. If you are familiar with shooting a bow, you'll understand how difficult it is to hold steady on the target. Add to that the refraction from the water-surface, and the chances of hitting the target decrease dramatically. And THEN, reeling in a fish that large without actually having any leverage as that you get from a rod. It's challenging, to say the least.
