Some dvd burners have a closed diode or it is welded to a piece of metal, so it won't fit in the mini maglite. Good idea with putting it in the mini maglite. I've known about making DIY lasers before, but I've never thought of putting it in a maglite host.

This is a very awesome project. Everyone should remember to keep safety first, however. I can't stress this enough. High output lasers can cause permanent retinal damage in an instant so be sure to avoid shining the laser at anything that could be reflective.

As far as my knowledge goes DVDs use much more fragile diodes and hence much more complicated regulation circuits than usual laser pointers. I experienced with a couple of cd diodes a while ago and learned they die easily. So can this work in and out for a total of a couple hours? if so, I need to try it :D

This laser will blind you if you shine it in your eyes, and it can cause damage even from just reflecting off surfaces into your eyes.

I had a 16X Liteon DVDRW and the draw doesn't come out. I already had it pulled apart because i wanted to check out the draw. It was stuffed but the laser diode was good. After about 3 hours or 2 steps in the video. I had the laser diode out. It was a bit bigger then the one that kipkay used. I tested it with 2X AA and it was bright but very wide angled. It also broke in about 3 min just by normal handling.

you cannot operate a LED diode on DC current. there must be a circuit drive to operate the LED.
if you try using DC current you will burn the LED.

Kip... just got mine to work.. I had spare DVD burner lying a round @ my work... it was 8 x but works fine... I just need to get $1 laser and get the focus barrel... I had a digital thermometer reading was 110F + ...tuff getting measurement with broad color spectrum.

I bought a 200mw laser diode from mfgcn.com and the aixiz housing as described in the video -- should be enough power to light matches, etc. Installed in a maglite just as described -- The lens on the laser module doesn't do a great job of focusing. I get a nice bright red laser beam but it won't burn anything. What am I doing wrong? I even tried new Lithium AA batteries--bright beam but no heat.

got an LED upgrade post up here somewhere, u can get it from Walmart for 5bux. the housing helps turn the laser on and off and comes with a reflective shield already cut.

Walmart has an LED upgrade for this flashlight. It comes with a reflective shield so you don't have to mod the old one and have on-off problems or bent, twisted pin issues like me. It costs around 5 bucks and worth it. I used hot glue to stick the new housing to the on-off trigger. and it works better than ever.

Your eyes are precious. How will you feel if a kid builds this and then blinds himself with it. This should carry a stern warning at the Beginning of the video. If it will light a match, it will also burn the delicate cells at the back of your eye. Even with caution, reflected light could hurt you using one of these. Change the vid to include a warning.
