how to cook them are they do taste like crap! Actually this one is a needle nose gar. We caught a alligator gar that day too but it was a little one only about 10 lbs. I didn't show it because I didn't want the video to be to long. Thinking about doing another video with the other footage we got that day of the alligator gar and the catfish and brem we caught.

This is technically a needle nose gar, not an alligator gar. Typically found in the southern states, but most commonly in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. I believe the world record for this fish is about 300 pounds (they only get that big if they're alligator gar). The only North American freshwater fish that gets any bigger is the Sturgeon.

cool fish, some guy I know from Kentucky calls them "Poor mans Lobster". He said if you slice it up and fry it in butter, it tastes like Lobster.

but I can tell you that when you are hulling him it does smell just like shrimp. No joke! But it don't taste like shrimp. I may try that butter thing one day. The people that I know that eat them make gar balls. It's a mix of different spices that ends up pretty good if you know what you are doing.

I caught a gar in Iowa once (no where near that size) - they are extremely rare around here - and I didn't know what the hell it was. I ended up cutting the fishing line and running like a little girl. All I could think about on the way home was the tall tales you heard as a kid about alligators in the sewer. LOL :)
