This shows the basic function of superconduction for trains. as the magnet is "trapped" within the superconductor's magnetic field, it doesn't fall of the tracks, thus makig the trains safer. This experiment uses liquid nitrogen (-196 celcius degrees)

  • Can someone

explain how this was done? In English ou en Francais; the comments describing the video don't explain the principle, and what the guys used. I understand the track was made up of small magnets, but what was that they poured into the receptacle to create such a strong field?

    • A superconductor

can be like a magnet. when you cool it down like that it becomes magnetic but the magnet is different, it doesn't have a north or south pole, it aligns based on the magnet fields near it, so when he puts it on that disk and cools it he is aligning the magnetic field. works pretty well until the superconductor heats up again, then it won't float.
