Maybe this is a stupid question...
but, does he know what he's saying, or is he just repeating what he's heard? I remember learning about a parrot that they thought could actually carry on a conversation. I always thought that was really interesting.

  when i pick up my car keys they say bye bye
  at bed time they say nite nite
  we have a third parrot (a pionus) living in the same cage if he is out and the greys are in the cage they will tell him to go to bed
