Established in 1877 to end the abuse of horses used in travel, spcaLA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Los Angeles) now mostly focuses its efforts on the area's abandoned and mistreated dogs and cats. In 2006 alone, spcaLA found homes for more than 2,200 animals and trained more than 10,000 people in the humane treatment of animals. They believe that animals have value beyond economic measurement and deserve legal, moral, and ethical consideration and protection.
