    • Wow thanks!

I've always wondered why this works. It took so many tries to break a 40 ounce beer bottle. Metacafe won't let me post a link to my vid on the site but if you search 40 ounce it will be there. If I had left a gap and made sure there was no air in the water it probably would have been easier. Thank you for demystifying.

      • the POWER ...of stale water

The difference when using stale water is amazing. Or boil some water, then cool it. That wine bottle would have shattered on the first try if I hadn't tried using my fist. I haven't tried boiled water in the gallon glass jug, but it *might* work. (Use a short hunk of 2x4 to guarantee success.)

Here's how to link videos, just trim down and remove the dot:

      • WARNING: DANGER

fej25 on Makezine blog reports slicing his hand when performing this trick in the past. The bottle shattered unexpectedly, and since he was gripping it tightly at the time, he received a serious laceration.

Suggestion: hold the bottle by the upper part of the neck. The neck is a bit more robust, and when bottles break, often the neck does not. Regardless, always expect that your entire bottle *might* collapse into razor-edged shards.
