A New Zealand ad showing you the difference between 5km when speeding / stopping.
My Grandad said he would never drive fast these days. “Alright, If there was a topless woman in a ferrari in front of me. Yesâ€Â, he said.
The guy has always made logical decisions!
For everyone complaining that this is an Australian ad not a New Zealand one, I got it from the "Land Transport NZ ~ Ikiiki Whenua Aotearoa" website.
By jacob^s_ladder 1141060738Wow, this is a really nice clip and i will really think about it next time driving 70 in a 50 Zone.
Zoe
Impact studies show that the amount of damage to a pedestrian is vastly different when struck at 15-25 that when struck a 40.
I hit a kid who thought it would be funny to jump out from behind a row of parked cars while I was working as a pizza delivery guy at the age of 17. I was only going 25mph (the posted limit) when I hit him. He broke his leg and got a concussion.
The accident report stated that since I was going the speed limit, the kid wasn't killed. Since the kid had been reported for pulling the same stunt a few times before (without getting hit, but causing accidents) I wasn't cited.
lucky you. since we know how weird these things often are, you easily could have been cited although you were 100% in the right and had everything tucked in. congratulations on your NON visit to jail!
By Peikko 1141149120you're still going to go at 70 in a 50 zone aren't you, haha (i think some people missed your joke)
By KX36 1140890101What are these zones{i think they are a system which doesn't let you hang out in a certain place or zone so u won't make traffic?}? and in which country?
By 7amo0d 1140867360most roads in the western world have a set speed limit, making it illegal to drive at a dangerous speed. i.e. you can't drive at 70mph on a small residential sideroad, but you can on a motorway.
By KX36 1140890061this ad is form the uk aswell. also i think it might of made a difference if the car didn't go into the back of it
By woolaston 1145390252this is not a UK ad, Monash University is in Australia, as someone who has lived in both Australia and New Zealand and seen the ads on television in both countries, i think i can safely say that it was played in both countries. :)
By rob4321 1145716580beeng an nzlander myself eye no eets from nz so dont go pullng off that englsh bullsht
By Benji00 1145921662I own a few driving schools for teens and would love to show this. Does anyone know where i can download the file? I've looked at Land Transport NZ and can't find it. Thanks!
By drivingteacher 1144438516It's on the site under "advertising", but here's a link for you
http://www. ltsa.govt.nz/ advertising/ ( minus the spaces, of course )
Under "Key priorities" click any of the four topics - Speed, Drunk- driving, etc.
You can download them all there, that's where I got them. "Understand" is another good clip ( it's posted on this site ).
Also, once you're in the advertising section, go to "Advertising archive" and scroll to the bottom. "Fading Families" ( in my humble opinion ) is also a great clip.
Hope this is helpful. Good luck spitting out some safe drivers for us! : )
In my personal opinion, when I'm driving just over 5 km/hr speed limit - I actually do think about this ad. It doesn't have to be in your face & bloody to get the message across. So well done RTA or who ever produced it.
By M O O 1143212113Stupid ad i think... if it was 20m closer theyd both be in the same mess... and totally unfair... one hit the corner, the other hit the middle...
By Mike_334782 1141859760The guy talking and the slower car were done first, then they did the truck and the faster car. The impact was real, and the guy in the car was a pro driver who knew the stunt he was doing. In Australia and New Zealand (ad is in Victoria, as inferred by the title at the beginning, since Monash Uni is in Victoria, but lots of the ads in Oz and NZ are shared anyway,) the driver is on the right hand side of the vehicle. Hence, the guy in the collision hit the truck on the passenger side of the car. Note the emergency response team that come to check him out? They were real. This was as real (and as dangerous) as the stunt work you see every day on TV. This just had a point.
Various methods of filming and photography, but all real footage. The only modification was in the combining of the shots into one piece of footage.
this add is quite old really but still has some very important points to make
and for the purpose of this ad the monash uni dublicated as exaclty as humanly possible the timing, driver reactions and type of cars including tyres and pressure so that the data obtain would be accurate as to be used in further experiments. That said ABS would also make a big difference to stopping distance too.
This clip should be shown to all who are getting or renewing driver's licenses.
By beelaker 1141176256However I would like to point out that it is not a New Zealand advertisment, it is an Australian one. The licence plates are Victorian.
By spaceyracer 1141091572Quite plausible, but waaaay too many variables. If they were to do a real test with mechanized braking that applied the same amount of brake pressure at the same point I would believe it. Plus the fact that unless New Zealanders are retarded there wouldnt have been a person in the car in a REAL experiment. Good deterent but i dont believe it.
By Festizian 1140927528 You DO realize it is a FAKE event staged for the commercial, but BASED on REAL data....
I for one found it very entertaining and informative..
Quite an effective ad.
When i took my drivers license, i was required to spend a few hours driving on a slippery course, driving through slick turns, stopping on a flat road, and uphill and downhill. I got to test the difference between 40, 45, 50 and 60 kmph several times, in all these situations. And i really did notice a big difference..
The vid was faked of course, but the numbers are well tested.

Kinda common sense, but video was quite interesting.
Laws of Physics can be so fun .. haha.. . . . not
Who on earth would think of driving 70 km in a 50 km zone, yeah alcoholics, bankrobbers, druggies but who else???
By matty231293 1140897087good tag line at the end, "the faster you go, the bigger the mess."
its a good thing that presenter can control time because i really wouldnt want to be standing where he was.
We all know speed kills this is sound advice that we all should take on board
By SKIPPY 1140889177Monash University is in Melbourne, Victoria.
By Aussie_Vixen 1140874305Speeding can kill...watch that speedometer... make sure it doesnt move over limit
By Sir Moxville 1140873062I NEVER drive over 100mph in town or out! I've never had a crash either!
By ChristianRedBlooded 1140843577Don't ge too proud of yourself, just thank God (if you do believe in God) and I bet you may have crash any time, maybe today!
By 7amo0d 1140867221all you need to do is convince people that speeding us unamerican. i guarantee that will stop almost all speeders in the USA, just like it beat off the metric system. =P
By KX36 1140890861Im sure Bush will fix us up with a law that requires all new cars to get GPS equipment that continually monitors your speed against the limit on the road you are driving. I heard a nasty rumour that several terrorists are driving around at high speed, all over the country! They must be stopped!
By Wolfbrother 1140970663you got the country wrong, its actually Australia, not newzealand.
By bribie100 1140853883this add is bullshit and it did not come from New Zealand it come from Australia
By Fatman G 1140942162this is an australian ad shown in new zealand. its used by the new zealnd land transport association and your right it is from victoria
By nZdan 1141290548First of all It's an australian ad, NZ aint the same as aust. Its all shite anyways, how can one finish at 5km/h when they said u wipe off HALF ur speed, half of 60 isnt 5... Someone failed physics and it wasn't me
By ITFN 1140874523maybe you failed maths then. if you drew it on a graph of speed vs time since they started breaking, you'd see a curve that gets steeper towards the end. they are saying that the first ~30mph took a lot of road to get rid of and the last ~30mph went in the last few metres. i.e. the braking becomes faster as you progress through the thing with the initial time after hitting the brakes having the speed change a lot less than the last few metres.
