Me, ME ME! That's all it ever is.
All we ever talk about on the road is how everyone else is an asshole and how I've seen them all be assholes while I'm one of the poor few suckers NOT being and asshole in this assholeish world full of asshole drivers in their asshole cars.
Bugger it all.

I'm an asshole who won't let others in sometimes. I'm an asshole who squeezes in at the end of a mergin lane just to skip the 15 cars in the other lane I just passed. And sometimes I'm the asshole not paying enough attention to the road signs to know I should be merging. And sometimes, but only sometimes, (rofl, in contempt... at my driving and at this whole stupid bloody issue) I'm the stupid asshole who allows the other assholes in the mergin lane to cut in front of me to get ahead, and I delay all the non-asshole nice drivers patiently waiting behind me.
I even attend the Assholes Anonymous groups for drivers who are selfish on the roads.... ... ...

GET A GRIP!
You know, there are places in the world (and no, Epping Rd in Sydney, where the M2 meets it citybound and 3 lanes become 2 outside the Microsoft building, look for the silver Festiva Trio around 8am with plate letters TYN, that's me.) where everyone thinks of the other driver first. There are no assholes, except for the tourists - which are tolerated - and everyone gets along fine! Better than fine, even. No road rage, no nothing.

It's called having a bit of compassion, a bit of patience, and a bit of generousity. It's called having a sense of values, and the integrity to live by them, not just claim them. (I just wish I could be a little more consistent at them myself)



BTW, the clip is good; I do think sometimes that it does need to be said, but it'd be great if we, by OUR BEHAVIOUR made it the exception, not the rule.

i know just what you mean regarding recognizing the asshole within oneself. there might actually be a few of us who are above it, but VERY few i think. above actually BEING an asshole to some greater or lesser extent, i mean. if we can't see this in ourselves, then we'll never be able to DO something about it. thanks for your sharing. only thing i would've done different in your position is say 'around here' without actually saying the name of the place! hope your towns aura stays always like that.

This I posted below but I wanted to add it as a direct reply since it addresses what you said here. Here's what I said below:

I've had it happen to me where I was in the merging lane and didn't know it, and by the time I was the only one not merged, all the jerks in the main lane wouldn't let me in so all I could do was drive forward until someone left an opening. It's like, if you don't want me to merge way up there, let me in here, asshole! What do they think, that I'm going to drive backwards? Everyone's so self centered when they're in a car."

And I'll add this comment: I suppose -you- have never been in a lane that had to merge and didn't realize it until most other people had merged? And -you- have never been the one that made a simple mistake and then had to live with 100 people acting like they're better than you and not letting you in, acting like jerks and treating you like you're the jerk when they're the ones being a jerk? I can tell the difference between a person who is obviously taking advantage of the merge lane and who is just trying to get in as soon as they realized they needed to. But if I stop 100yds back from the end of the lane and try to merge in the guy already won't let me in because he's the asshole, not me, so my only choice is to creep forward car by car until someone recognizes that no I'm -not- trying to cut, because if I were I'd just drive straight up to the end and not be trying to merge 100yds back. But no, ALL people in cars are assholes and have no empathy for the drivers around them. I hate that.

Well there's no point in replying below as well as here, that would just be 'self centered'.

First of all this is not what I was talking about but since you brought it up; A basic skill you are supposed to know when driving is to look ahead, it is an obligation. From the sounds of it, you screw up this fundamental piece of driving routinely, so you deserve to wait. Take a hint - take a driving course - your a road hazard and you will cause an accident if you have not already. Your probably the same type of person that stops at the top of an escalator or at the doors of an elevator. Or tries to get onto a bus / subway before those exiting have a chance to get out. FRIGGING IDIOT!!!! There are other people in the world you know, each having just as much right to get to their destination as you.

The point here was; It is a basic courtesy is to not use the merging lane as a catapult to get ahead of everybody who has waited there turn to get through the bottle neck. Those who do this are indeed 'self centered' and yes I would like to know why they feel they are so important and everybody else are just assholes (your words).

Also, since you appreciate long drawn out (milk it for all it's worth) soliliques; most people will slow down to let another driver in if they simply use a blinker, I know I do. Of course you probably come to a dead stop to let these poor 'victims of circumstance in', with absolutely no regard for those behind you, again - FRIGING IDIOT!!!!

Sweet, nice to know who is mature enough to not resort to personal attacks and who isn't. By making this about me, instead of the issue, all you've done is completely undermined any credibility your argument might have otherwise had.

And for your information, you don't actually have to merge until the cones. It's not my fault that you choose, for whatever reason, to merge ONE MILE EARLY like the rest of the lemmings. If you were really using your driving skills and looking ahead you would realize "Hey, there's a perfectly valid mile of pavement left in that lane. And if these two lanes of traffic here were still spread out over all three lanes and merging at the RIGHT place, the traffic would actually be BACKED UP LESS. OMG logic for the win.

You will never, ever win an argument by attacking the person instead of addressing the issue. I would have thought that you would have learned that by your age, but then I probably shouldn't presume anything.

I didn't call you an asshole. I never said "you are a" or "you must be a" but you did. Check and mate, what is that... supposed to prevent me from having something else to say?

You have more time on your hands to argue at strangers on tha intarweb than I do. Just think to yourself what position you're defending: the anonymous callous treatment of strangers who have done no wrong but try to join the line you're in. As long as the majority of the world thinks in that "me before all others" way, we're all going straight to hell.

Well, point by point then:

No you did not directly write directly to me the words "you are an asshole" but yes you did say those who would not let you in were " assholes ". This after I had stated the rare (but fortunate) situations I had been in where those waiting their turn would not let somebody abusing the merge lane in. So yes, by inference, you did call me an asshole, along with others who in the situation would not let you in.

"Check and Mate" was along the same lines as your "OMG logic for the win.". I merely put a twist on your attempt to claim victory in this discussion. And, no of course I did not think it would prevent you from saying more. I actually just noticed you have a third posting on this page saying the same thing. So it would seem you must be heard THREE TIMES.

It appears we have a relatively equal amount of time on our hands to argue with strangers on the internet, actually judging by your prolificacy of postings, you have far more time than I do. Whatever this is supposed to mean, I'm not entirely sure what your inferring.

I assume you are maintaining in your last point, that the person cutting in the end of the merge lane os the victim and those who do not wish to let the person in are thinking "me before all others" and not the other way around. Well, I just don't get that at all. Put up with me a little longer:
Lets say there is a line up for a movie. The line (for whatever reason) extends outside the actual theatre and down the sidewalk. Can we agree the doors to the theatre would represent a bottle neck into the theatre, for the sidedwalk (approaching from two sides) and the parking lot. Now normally people wishing to watch the movie would take a place at/near the end of the 'back up'. Technically, I guess the theatre doors would be the last chance to merge into the theatre. So, I guess by YOUR logic; if somebody tried to cut in at the doors, it would be perfectly okay and whoever did not let them in would of course be callous and an asshole.

I'll bet your going to say that's not what you meant but indeed they are the same thing. With respect to what I originally wrote.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll have some nice retort. Actually I enjoy your postings most of the time, just not when they attack me (directly or lumped with others). The main prob of to day is that everyone is an asshole any way u look at it there is allways someone who thinks they're better than you.I am the biggest asshole ther is cause im better than all of you!!! hahahahaha

Weigh on one hand the "frustration" that someone in the line would have by having just ONE car more in front of them, compared to the frustration of the guy stuck against his will in the merge lane with a HUNDRED people all being assholes and not letting him in. Which is worse? Is where you're going so important that you can't let one single car in in front of you? If so I want your life because you must be someone really freaking important.

who of us is THAT freaking important? nobody!!! lets show our humanity a little more. behind the wheel is probably one of the best places to start since it seems to be needed so much there.

And who amongst us has never, just once ever, tried to sneak in front of a line, any line? hummm?

i'll be the first here to hold my hand up and blush. although i admit my habits have gotten better and it's been a long time since something like that, you did say 'ever' and i'm therefore as culpable as the next person. ..... isn't it time we started blowing peoples minds by being kind and courteously inviting them to the line in front of us, thus showing them that they could try to do the same for someone else next time?

when I was a little younger I used to be bolder but now I have changed my ways a bit and I always leave space for any car to cut in front of me.. (except at a supermarket line-up at a cashiers NO ONE cuts in front of me !!) hahaha

At first I thought you were just plain nuts but then the more I thought about it, kindness is contagious this would likely be passed on. I've seen stranger things happen. The only thing I'd change would be to give the person my spot and go to the back of the line myself, not just let them in ahead of me (and those behind me).

wow! that would certainly remove any griping form those around you who thought you acted too arbitrarily on THEIR behalf in your kindness thought. and while that would 'hurt' a little, yeah, i'd join you in that action. the only difficulty would be if we were talking about the freeway situation, eh what? : )

wow! how right you are (and wolfling is). let's all move to sydney, eh? :) just kidding. if we ALL did that, i imagine their compassion for each other might start to dry up! i sure hope they have some sort of "compassion test" would-be immigrants to their fair city/area have to take in order to keep their ever so enviable status quo. i wonder (and why not say 'suppose') if they are super-cool at the check out lines in the stores and like in this film sort of places also.

I live in Quebec and road rage and check-out rage is the norm here. It's kill or be killed! (just joking) (about killing I mean) I also notice alot of people telling me with hand signals that I'm #1. Geeee they're soooo nice.!

oh yeah,... #1 ! :) i had forgotten about that. it's been so long since i have been in those kind of situations that the details have gotten lost (thankfully). i live lot closer to wolflings world than 6 lanes each way that represent so much of modern traffic. people may not get out their car and bow and ask you to go in front of them like he has in sydney but our streets and store lines are pretty orderly. we don't even have those 10 or less item kind of check outs. they just shift personel as needed and everyone gets on their way reasonably quickly.
