Nitroglycerin is moderately easy to detonate, and a hammer is more than enough. Nitrogen triiodide will detonate if it is breathed on. It is an explosive with no use other than a novelty.

A few factoids -

Nitric acid, the acid shown in the beginning of the video, will cause very deep chemical burns that take weeks to heal after contact of just five seconds. It also fumes, and the vapor is very choking. The red gas in the flask is nitrogen dioxide, a very toxic gas that can produce, and be produced from, nitric acid. Sulfuric acid is also dangerous and very reactive to flesh, but is not close to the danger of nitric acid.

Now I will be afraid of birds.

  • Dont blow your fingers off!!!

Iits made by filtering at least thirty percent anhydrous ammonia through iodine crystals and letting them dry and if you let them dry long enough it will eventually detonate on its own

  • cant understand

from starting what liqud take in conical flask and in last by which u touch the mixture

  • lol my poor bird

after watching this i went and checked on my bird(seeing as i made this), and to my dismay, one of his shedded feathers fell in it and blew his cage up and started a fire in my home...poor, poor milo V-V

  • this is wicked!!!!

just more ways for me to make some explosives lol nah not even eh, id breath to heavy and blow my left ear off, ill stick with the dry ice

So its completley safe aslong as yu don't toch it with afeather :)

you can make a mine out of this...

  • it great

actually TNT also discovered by this experiment..
alfred nobel discovered dynamite by using nitroglycerine.

  • Is this the stuff on Brainiac?

They would have gags using a black exploding powder that was this sensitive.

  • hi it so cool

how you get this sthff i tring to get nitro triidide the some cool joks (i dont tring kill no 1)

  • amazing

    dawg

    By bupider 1189109133
  • if that triiodide is so sensitive

then how do you transport it or store it for later use?

    By mig19 1188670191
    • You don't!

It has absolutely no use, apart from demonstrations, which it's great for!

      By Biopyro 1206982581
    • it is insensitive wen wet

only wen it dries up it becomes sensitive and it does not explode with a fire ,it actualy decomposes very very rapidly.

      By pedrillo 1191943183
    • Thats a crock..

Please don't listen to this non-sense! Anyone who has actually used this stuff knows that it can and will spontaneously combust at any time, even when wet. It is much less sensitive when wet.. But it is not "insensitive." Use some common sense people. I had it blow up in my kitchen undisturbed while the ammonia was still draining through the filter. Can't get any wetter than that. And it produces horrible stains. Bye bye kitchen cubbards, counter, and floor.

      By appleoddity 1201389561
    • You keep it wet!

keeping it wet with alcohol works well ,because it evaporates quickly. So you can set it up and not have to wait too long for it to dry.

      By DV8TED 1189242313
    • That's easy.

You don't. You make it and set it off.

  • what the hell

are u a science expert or science freak???!!!

    By jack3889 1188546057
  • DAMN DUDE......

I've heard about these compounds, and methods of making them, but never had the balls to play with them myself. You've satisfied my curiosity at no danger to myself! Thanks for the great vid. 5 stars. Keep up the great work, and please continue to be careful!

    By jasontimmer 1196259680
  • rudimentary!

a rudimentary display of the basic compounds of C-4, or semtex, czeck rep.
prefer the latter as it is malleable and easily usable in an environment of drastic temperature fluctuations. both are revered for their application as an incendiary that you can use for a heating element, ergo "plastic fire" as they say in the field....

    • shut the F**k up

with your "smarter than thou" rhetoric. Nobody gives a S**t about you stroking your own ego. This is a neat, original vid. Give the man credit.

      By jasontimmer 1196259519
    • LOL..

So, you are saying C4 (or plastic explosives) consists of nitroglycerin? LOL... Please do some research.

      By appleoddity 1201389746
  • My words exactly

    Are you INSANE !!!!!!

    By noogiex 1188374425
  • phshshhh

i bet that S**t is fake

    By Moejoemoejowe 1188429332
    • Yeah, it's fake.

It's not nitroglycerin, it's just water, and I made it explode and burn with nothing but my will.

And it's not nitrogen triiodide, it's a DIFFERENT explosive that detonates when it's touched by a feather. You caught me.

      By Greenhorn82 1188501998
    • Awesome!

Actually no, it's not fake. I read on how to produce both these explosives a many years ago but given the warnings that came with the experiments I decided not to risk it - this video pretty much shows why. Producing Nitro is a very sensitive process - messing up will mean no more hands. Dynamite is actually produced from nitroglycerin (as shown in the video). By mixing nitro with an absorbent substance such as fine wood chippings or sawdust it made the nitro that slightly less sensitive.
Amazing video Greenhorn, my hat off to you mate for doing these experiments. You've certainly got my 5* and your directors cut nomination is very well deserving.
