Indian people...
are the best at teaching math and economics. Many of my professors are Indian. They can teach pretty well, but sometimes they are hard to understand....lol

  (104 times 4) =
  (100 times 4) = 400
  (4 times 4) = 16
  
  Similar concept as the video. Divide and conquer. Your approach applies to more general cases though. It will work with any multiplication.

  is ( a + b )^2 = (a)^2 + 2ab + (b)^2
  therefore (104)^2 = (100 + 4) ^2
  = (100)^2 + 2(100)(4) + (4)^2
  = 10000 + 800 +16
  = 10816

  Your formula is better,
  
  the one on the video is great for mental calculations but only for numbers around 100.
  
  Yours is good for all numbers, althought for numbers around 100 the formula from the video might be easier for a few people to work it out mentally.

Using standard mathematics
a= 100, b=0, c=4 a^2 c(2a c)
(a b c)^2 = (a b c)(a b c)
a^2 2ab 2ac b^2 2bc c^2 (general cross-wise method) b=0 so
b(b 2a 2c) c(2a c) c^2=a^2 c(2a c),
test it out
4(200 4) 10000 = 816 10000 = 10816
