As I built this fish pond for water plants as well as fish I only have goldfish orfe and rudd, no koi. Koi damage plants require deep water and filtration and get too big for this type of pond. The small rocks round the edge allow wildlife to climb in and out easily. I've used quite a few evergreen water plants so the pond does not look too bare during winter months. The rudd breed readily each year. So far no problems from herons=CapelOwl
