All that is happening is when you put pressure on the bottle it increase the pressure and the pressure is compressing the air inside the start making it heavier so that is why it sinks.

the trick works by air bieng trapped under the knot in the straw, when the bottle is squeezed the air is compressed giving the straw less upthrust and more weight making it sink. If it dosnt float.. make sure there are no holes in the straw that could let any air out when it is dropped into the bottle, or if it dosnt sink.. give it another paper clip to add weight. if theres too much air in the straw when compressed it will over power the weight and not sink.
