A quick hack to change the start menu text to something besides start.

note:
Do not attempt this hack if you run ad-aware or you do not have SP2 installed. Also note that although you can make the text longer than 5 characters, I have not personally tested it, and therefore do not recommend it.

    • please becareful with this method...

by changing the registry and pointing at a different shell than "explorer.exe" somtimes a virus prog. or reg cleaner will pick up the new shell as a problem and clean it ie "explorerhack.exe" once its cleaned you wont be able to logon to your desktop, i see a guy posted that this broke his PC.. very plausable, this was probably the case... but if this happens its easy to fix, when you logon start task manager> newtask>regedit and point the shell back to the original exe

    • It could have been easily fixed.

If this broke your computer (i.e. you couldn't access your desktop) don't worry, you're in good company. It happened to me, too, and I didn't pay a dime to fix my system. If you're interested, click the "thumbs up" button and I make a vid explaining how to fix it.

If you haven't heard any of the terms used in this video, it's best that you DO NOT try this. It works fine when done correctly

  • RE: change start menu text

You MUST keep it at exactly 5 characters or it won't load the desktop upon log in/boot. I tried it.

  • Minor help.

I know that this works, but when I restarted my computer, the only thing that showed up was my desktop background. I fixed that problem, but I still can't get this hack to work. Any ideas?

  • colorz!

    PS.

Is there any way to change the COLOR of the start button?

    By bentpaperclip 1192154121
  • Length

There are no length restrictions except that of the toolbar itself, and no need to change a number in any piece of registry. Tested that myself. Mine is 17 characters long, no problem.

  • profile

if you have different profiles on your pc, will it change on every single profile??

    By SkilledALEX 1190813509

    • note about xp

If you are running a classical interface (the one without the green stylized start menu), you need to change string table 38, not 37.

      By JeffersonAve212 1188940098
    • * * * * *

Thanks! I changed string table 38 and it worked.

      By B_E_S_T 1189234140
  • 5 chars exactly

I think its got to be exactly five characters right? so if you have like three just add two spaces after

    By jedg3 1188844199
  • This guy.

    Is smart.
However, this is some of the DUMBEST S**t IVE EVER SEEN.

Id advise anybody who does not know what they are doing to stay away from this, or you're going to completely f*ck up your computer.

    By chickensgocluck 1193531318
  • :(

why didnt it work with me correctly?? i got some problems. after i done what u did in the video and restarted my computer the Start changed i was happy with that but if i open any folder or program and clicked on the X button(exit) internet Explorer opens up with a new blank page. its good that i made a back up to the explorer.exe at first. so i done everything is it used to be and internet explorer stoped showing when i click on the X button. i might try it again and might work. anyways thx.

    By Boyd91 1192408889
  • nice...but

At the end, you do not have to restart your computer. Simply open your task manager (achieved by pressing Alt Control Delete), click the Processes tab, and find explorer.exe. Select explorer.exe then press 'End Process'. After that, your windows bar at the bottom WILL disappear, so don't freak. Click the Applications tab, push 'New Task...' then type in the new name you have used for your explorer.exe, such as in what was used in this video, explorerhack.exe

  • confused

where do i get the registry editor

    By t2233 1190932476
    • it's not a program...

Go to start-->run-->type in regedit, then enter

      By crazyassjosh 1191958660
  • Hmm..

In finland we have text "Käynnistä" instead of "Start" so you may able to use 9 letters... I think.

    By Spemelitykki 1190208283
  • Cool

looks good, you dont have to always redirect it via registry, it makes it harder to actually repair the PC, overwriting the explorer.exe does the trick, then move the backup into place if you do not like it.

more than 5 letters on the start button will prolly just stretch it, or the letters do not show

    By laos101 1189593101
  • I 've read about that

in the past. If i can recall well, it was mentioned that the new text had to be 5 letters long, just as "start" is. I might be wrong about this, or it could be for WindowsNT or Windows2000. It was mentioned that any other lengthed word than 5 letters would cause problems.
Any hint about that? Just trying to help, hope I am not misleading people.

    By El_Greco 1188673596
    • no you are right

i've known this trick for along time...
and you are right if you put in a word with more than 5 letters you have to do another registry modification,
cant remember where but you have to tell windows how many letters the start button will have (mine is 8 letters).
i tried afirst time without changing value for number of letter and mess up.
but when i modified the value for 8 , it worked well.
i'm still using it as of now
i took the trick from kelly's corner !
go there hope it help !

    • To help others out further more....

Go to the website and go to tweaks.

Crtl + F "111". It's on the right hand side.

      By EndlessMyk08 1188951573
    • ok, thx

i don't really care to do it myself, just for caution for anyone who would try it. your comment is very helpful to that direction
