    • great vid and easy to do

i just build mine .. its pretty cool i can charge my ipod .. which usually only charges through my computer .. not any other charger...
      usb specifications : 5 volt, 100-400 mA
so anything between that ampererage will get near to any usb device to charge ..
      its great
      cheers,

  • awsome

this is the best constructed solar array ive ever seen in a diy very portable and useful! now a suggestion add a capacitor somewhere in the wiring to prevent spikes in power from clouds and other things like that and if you get one big enough you could bring it into the shade for a few seconds to move the charging spot (shade is moving in or something) and then your charge wont be inturupted

  • works great, but

for some reason, even when i had exactly 5 volts, i couldnt get anything to happen. i added a 5 volt regulator and it worked. if anyone else tries this, i would suggest a regulator. also, i tried adding 4 more and doing it in series, and i got 15 volts! just a suggestion for higher powered devices.

    • dont work

you need amperage as well :D

By laos101 1190930089 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • try again

these solar units have quiet some power .. each unit can usually give u up to 50mA so if 4 units are wired propery a definite 100+ mA is created .. so a usb device should charge... just be careful that there is no shade over any of the panels .. and maybe check the finished circuit with an voltmeter ampermeter before actually charging a device ..
      cheers,'

    • why?

I thought that if the maximum of the 4 was around 5V and about the nessessary amps then the cell phone will simply not work when there is not enough voltage. it cant go over if thats the max voltage It can fry if there's not enough voltage? it just cant power the damn thing!

  • Hey babblin

At the moment I am building a solar powered home in so florida. The power will be harnessed in batteries for the night hours. we will be connected to the grid and selling power unused to the local power company.I am not the engineer of record.

I thought that if the maximum of the 4 was around 5V and about the nessessary amps then the cell phone will simply not work when there is not enough voltage. it cant go over if thats the max voltage It can fry if there's not enough voltage? it just cant power the damn thing!

  • AC power

it would be possible to plug something in that you would normally need a wall socket for-like a laptop, for example. However a wall socket gives an output of 110 volts in the US...you'll need more than a couple of garden lamps for that. lol

  • You should build your own website

The World need innovative people like you. This is an amazing video. It "does" save the environment as we're using existing materials that have been produced. Thank you for sharing. We would love to see your own website with all these videos. People would actually pay for these if you build them nicely.

  • Awesome

I love the idea, and I'll end up doing this myself one afternoon, to see how it rolls

    HOWEVER:

USB ports use a Set voltage/amperage with 5V and 500 mA ( I believe so)

If you have a voltage going over, or as you say having not enough, under, then it will end up frying your device or not working, so do at risk and make sure you use a solar cell set thats best suited

However, its still a VERY NICE idea, since it gives a decent output, and this is compatible with so much.

On a sunny day or too many cells hooked up might fry the devices battery. "Look honey, the suns powering my ipod...OH S**t PUT OUT THE FIRE!!!!"
