Trick in Metacafe. The tricks should work on every number and his does.
By the way, the number closest to 13 is not 13, but 14 or 12 (whole numbers). He prolly meant closest number with 0 at the end.

One more trick:
First subtract 2 from the number.
Then find the square of the number
then add 4 to the result.

But...
Doesn't this trick only work with numbers close to base 10? I tried with 37, and it didn't work. 37 is close to 40, so 3. 37 3 = 40. 40 * 40 = 16000. 3@ = 16009.

  =1360 (3*3)
  = 1369

  something happened with my original post, plus I miscalculated. But it's still wrong. 37 is close to 40 so 3. 37 3 = 40. 40 * 40 = 1600. 1600 3squared = 1609. 37 squared = 1369. Therefore this is wrong, except for numbers close to base 10.

  Yeah, I was doing it backwards. You reverse the sign for the number you subtracted or added to the original. So 37 is close to 40, which is plus 3. 37 minus 3 is 34. 40 times 34 equals 1360. Plus 3 squared is 1369. Sorry, you're right.
