TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, it's just a joint. It's just an acronym for a joint. It's a very complex joint, however. You have two of every joint in your body. You have two hips, two knees, two ankles, two elbows, but they all can work independently. You can flex one elbow without the other, you can bend one knee without the other. The TMJ joint is different, it's the only one in the body that you actually can't work one side without the other. If you put your fingers right in front of your ears, and you open and close, that's what you'll feel is your temporomandibular joint. It's connected by this bone across your face. The complexity of the joint is increased because both joints have to work simultaneously. If there is any kind of injury to one side or the other, then it will affect the entire joint. Also grinding, misalignment of teeth, lots of things can affect the joint. It's a very touchy joint, and you need to make sure it's taken care of before any problems get involved in it.
