Large Piranha

teeth are too set apart and pointed ... piranha teeth are saw-like and close together ... sort of like catching your finger in a mouse-trap with razor blades ... one grabs a bite, then another and another, and the first is back for more ... and you're gone in niblets.

I'd be curious if someone could find out what the real fish is ... then the poster can change the title.

It's a goliath tigerfish, most likely. Great sportfish (like a freshwater marlin) for anglers. They grow up to 20kg and inhabit the Congo. Very nasty teeth and some say they like to bite swimming children. A friend of mine spent 2 years in Congo (Brazzaville) and said he remembers seeing one that was at least a meter or more long (3-4 feet) that the locals had clubbed to death. He has a tooth he kept.

That is a Tiger Fish, not a pirahna. Tiger fish are quite common in the big rivers in Africa, especially the Niger and the Chobe. I spent a week there fishing for them. Excellent sport but they don't taste too good so we put most back in. As NCB says, the fact its being held by an African kinda gives it away!

Isnt it that this so called tiger fish is a family member of the Serrasalmidae Characin. Which means its a relative of Piranha. Both of this species are dangerous if they become agressive.

I am from Africa and can say with conviction that that is a tiger fish not a pirahna. i have caught several.

have seen many of these in Southern Africa especially on the Zambezi river that flows into the Victoria Falls. Previous comment of many small bones are true but the meat is delicious when prepared on a fire. Also the tiger fish wont bite at anything that is bigger than its own mouth size, the object it bites must be in total smaller than its mouth, so it wont even take a bite at your leg cause your body in total is bigger than its mouth, it's a great sporting fish to catch and gives a hell of a fight as it always swims upstream when hooked

No doubt, it is a tiger fish from Southern Africa. I lived in Zambia for 5 years and saw many of those. They are a fun sport fish, but full of little bones when eating them. They can get bigger than the one in your picture.

This is called a "Goliath Tiger" and these are only found in the Zambezi river towards the Congo (DRC).
Many other species of tigerfish are also found in Africa, but the Goliath is by far the biggest.

As other people have said, this is an African Tiger Fish (Hydrocynus goliath).
Its not a piranha, and its not some weird new "undiscovered" fish (its been known for over a hundred years).

This is not a piranha

That is called Tiger Fish found in fresh waters of southern africa. It does not attack people only eat fish, but it does have a wicked bite when you try to pull the hook out from its jaws.

The caribe and the rhombeus are two of the piranha species that could actually grow up to two feet in length (although the biggest was recorded to be a foot and a half), the teeth as other users say, are really the type that a piranha would not have. I've owned and studied about piranha, and i'd bet my family jewels that the photo is NOT a piranha ü

he does look like a piranha but I doubt it is one. i've seen piranha & they don't look like that plus their color is silver with reddish or pinkish...well the one i saw were the way i described them. hope you really find out what kind of fish it really is.

Here in Norway, a guy showed me a dead piranha from his aquarium. It was 65 cm, and yeah, that is true. They grow a lot bigger than the 30 cm mentioned in literature

I live in South Africa and have been fishing my whole life. This is a Tiger Fish and they feed on smaller fish and sometimes been seen leaping out the water to catch the odd bird.
