Attorney Dan Burke of Parker Waichman discusses knee replacement surgery and some known defects.

High-flex knee replacements are designed and marketed for young and more active patients. Instead of the 120 degrees of flexion offered by traditional knee replacements, the high-flex version offers 160 degrees of motion. This is the amount of motion needed by a baseball catcher to squat real low.

Problems have developed with nearly one-third of these high-flex knee replacements. A knee implant consists of three parts. The femoral component attaches to your femur, or thigh bone. The tibial base plate attaches to the patella and tibia in the lower part of your leg. The articular surface is the part that moves in and out and up and down to make your knee replacement flex like a normal knee.

A knee replacement with 160 degrees of flexion needs to bear a lot more weight than a traditional knee replacement. As a result, the components of these knees have been loosening. In some cases, the knee replacement even needs to be revised. If you have had a high-flex knee replacement and are having problems, you can make a claim.

Especially problematic is the “Next Gen Knee” manufactured by Zimmer Corporation. Models include the LPSFLEX, the CRFLEX and the Gender Solutions (designed for women). This product is still available commercially, but one well-known doctor who has placed these implants now says that they should never be used.
