    explanation for this is the tin can reflects the signal the antennae could not receive back towards the antennae so it received more signal unaided like a mini satellite dish :P.

      This doesnt work exactly like a satalite dish. A satalite dish is a parabolic reflector that focuses the signal that is bounced off it at a very specific point. This Cantenna is actually a wave guide, the can catches more signal than an open air antenna and it is 'guided' down the can. This results in improved signal but makes it very directional.

      this serves as a cylindrical antenna, but much better if you use a parabolic shape that reflects radio siglals through a specific point. With this kind, it really improved transceiving signals.

    This is good one ! I just got back from the emergency room after cutting my fingers off
    on the sharp edges of the can. and I am able to surf wirelesly with one hand from 10 extra feet away...... not worry the doctor said, just keep them clean and dry and i should get back some of the feeling and mobility in my hand.

    How do i improve the signals of my build-in wifi in my notebook? Do i need to build a large aluminium can toput it in?

    • Laptops

      WiFi antennas are built in to the laptop's lid, usually along the top edge.

      Wires lead down the edge of the lid from the antenna into the laptop's built-in WiFI adapter on the bottom of the motherboard.

      You could always buy a USB adapter. However, it would be wise to first borrow one from a friend to see if a USB works better than the laptop's built-in one.

      Alternately, you could point an oil drum at the access point & sit in the bottom of the oil drum with your laptop. :)
