      Best done on a calm day, so you get lots of height. Also, probably a good idea to wrap a piece of aluminum foil around the balsa and place the candles on that. Much safer.

    do this after a hard rain or when everything is snow covered. they fly better when it is cold and you don't set the neighbor's hay field on fire. I was only 12 at the time and could plead stupidity.

    use drinking straws instead of wood, much lighter. In Australia, this only works in the winter or on really cold nights, it also works better with about a half a fire lighter. But if you use too much fire lighter the bag heats up too much and melts itself to the ground. Be careful with this, I semi set fire to neighbour's yard, had to jump the fence and put it out, wasn't too big though.

    I remember this from some time ago. Except then large trash bags were used with straws connected instead of balsa wood. The problem is that when these are let loose in the sky at night people will begin calling the police about UFOs. This takes away from what the police are doing to investigate this and then someone gets in trouble if caught.

    Its part of a traditional festival in Asia. However in recent times, the flying of these lanterns have been banned by the Malaysian and, I think, the Singaporean government because they have been known to land on houses and set them on fire.
