You can get a kilo of copper at a time or a 25 kilogram bag from any feed mill. Be careful with it though. I used to work in feed mills and a good wiff will burn your nostrils for a few hours and you won't be breathing very well for a bit but after a while, you'll be fine.

For anyone who wants to mess with this stuff, be sure to wear a mask while you're moving it around (spooning it to jar) as well as gloves because the dust from copper sulphate is quite harsh. It can also burn your skin. I've learned my lesson the hard way.

heat the solution till it's saturated instead of adding and stirring it the hard way. Only the water will boil so don't worry about losing the copper sulphate or inhaling its vapour.

will produce crystals, however copper sulfate makes the nice large blue ones, you can of course use salt to make white cubical crystals or sugar, which will make I believe flattened decahedrons.

I have not come across anything that is as effective in producing crystals as copper sulphate. In terms of safety, copper sulphate is pretty safe. It is used as a colorant in various foods such as blue/green colored syrups.

The solution is poisonous in large amounts if ingested (eaten). Hence, if you eat the crystals, they are bad for you. However, if you have dry crystals, it is safe to touch them provided you wash your hands.
